Title: Getting the most out of a mkII
Post by: Joe12 on 07 October 2003, 20:58
Is there much that can be done with a standard mkII 8v 1987 model to improve the accelaration? Or is it worth it if it has done 140k miles? Is chipping an option? And if so how much should it cost? ???

I have a 1989 MK2 8v GTI and i had it tuned on the rolling road with a K&N it made a nice difference.

I asked them about re-chipping the car they said everything they could do with a new chip they did with the standard 1.

its worth doing...  ;)

What's a k&n? I had it serviced yesterday and had a new timing belt fitted. It's running a lot better (and is a lot faster!!) but it seems to be missing a little bit and has started pinking a tiny bit. Took it back to the garage but they said they could not do any more to it, cause of it's age (so they say) it will never be "quite" right no matter what is done to it. Have I been the victim of a half arsed job?!  :-\

What a load of sh!t! that garage sounds full of twits. Are you using optimax? if you are and it has just starting pinking then the garage has f**ked up your ignition timing.

K&N do performance air filters and induction kits.

take it to a VW specialist to get serviced properly!

i use two garages for mine, one for general/hard labour jobs and another fella for when it comes to engine work etc

just ask around or look around for VAG specialists - if i can find an ex-VAG service manager in the Isle of Man to work on my car then you must be able a specialist somewhere to work on yours!!

I find chucking in a bottle of STP injector cleaner in with the fuel makes a noticeable difference. I need to clean my inlet manifold out cos there's black sh!t gathering in there. Just GUNK'd the block and gearbox so it's looking a little bit better now. New spark plugs helped, but I had done 20k since I had it and I didn't know when they were last changed before I got it.

my mk2s a 1985 with 114 k on clock, all ive done is service it, and bang a k+n panel filter in and drill the air box, then richen the mixture a bit cause it will run lean if ya dont!, along with the nice 8v grunty exhaust note theres a nice induction raw also and if it aint just me but the old girl feels alot quicker, and wipes the floor of my mk4!
