I just had a new 1.8 16V engione put into my golf after the last one died. Its all in and running. I ve been told to do the first 500 miles and not to go over 2500 rpm then get an oil change. But what happend after that? Do i have to keep driveing at no more the 2500rpm without damageing the engine.

Treat it gently for the first 1000 miles after 500 you can use a bit more on the rev range but if you really want to look after your engine then don't cane it until after at least 1000 miles as this is where the new parts wear to each other if you drive it hard then the wear becomes uneven and causes you more problems.
BTW do you have any problems with the law and the German Plates?

I have not had any problems with my plate, so far!

i was told to vary the revs on mine after saying i was driving it sensibly. can't quite remember why but it was something to do with bedding the new pistons in?! i keep the revs fairly low though just to be on the safe side. don't think mine would get anywhere staying under 2500!

Don't cane it but don't drive like an old grandad, the engine needs to rev freely, and to do that as joe says vary the rev range, so that all the parts can bind and settle with each other. between 5-800 miles is the crucial area, if you go mad in that rev range then there will be repercusions.
You should be alright to give it some wellie somewhere after 1200 miles, and change the oil to some nice clean good quality stuff, like synta silver or something like that, and remember a genuine vag filter. Obviously don't go over the top as soon as you hit 1200miles as things will still be adjusting to final positions, but if you are careful and don't go mad then the engine will be fine.

well when mines back up n rebuilt. ive been told the first 500mile is upto 4k. then an oil change
then upto 1000mile im allowed upto 6k. plus another oil change at 800mile
once i hit 1000. ive to do an oil change to VAG Silver Synta and im free to go willy nilly!!
also, the first 1000 mile should use cheap sh!te 15w40 mineral oil to allow everything to bed properly
