Hi Guys
Yet another post.. ok ive fitted a new cylinder head, think timing may be slightly out.. its feeling very sluggest and revs very slowly, also getting back firing. Any ideas what i need to do?

Does sound like the timing.
Get someone to do it. Or do it yourself by ear :wink:

when you fitted the new head did you use new head bolts because they are stretch style ones and have to be replaced if the are undone or removed. if not this can cause these symptoms if you did then it will be timing

well heres the story.. yes i used new head bolts. but... i fitted the head and then realised i should have fitted the downpipes in first. (as i removed these) so as i hadnt run the engine and caused any heat i removed the bolts and head and put the downpipes in place and then rebuit the rest of the head. I asked a machanic about this and they thought it would be fine....
Last night the car was running like a dream, temp was about a 1/4 of the way round (which i would say was normal) and it was going well. Then this morning i run it when its warmer and its sluggish, revs slow and the temp is at just under half way.
Any ideas?

the bolts stretch as you torque them.. ive seen them reused with no problem, but then again ive seen them reused with BIG problems.. not sure its worth the risk for a few quid.
sounds like timing to me btw.

i think the fact that its back firing.. kinda points to timing? u think? its odd though that last nite it was running fine.. almost like the cooler air helped...

pb.. thats digi 8v right the most commmon mistake ive seen is when the cam is timed to the rocker cover instead of being timed to the mark on the plastic trim which holds the cam cover on... i wouold loosen the belt tensioner and take out plug no 1 turn the crank till u have perfect tdc on no1 then set u cam to 12oclock on the trim u should see the mark, then line auxillary drive for dizie so rotor fires at no1 then retighten your belt and start her up...
when all running run the procedure of blue temp send off 3revs over 3k etc and time to 6btdc at 2250-2500rpm

just been to see my local VW speciaist, its booked in thursday to have its mixture and timing sorted. Can't wait to have it running proper..
He recons i should fit a 2L bottom end to her... fit a 270 Cam and remap it and i'll be laughin..

2nd update...
Just got her back from my VW man.. sorted timing out and mixture.. an all round good tune.. cost me 92 quid.. money well spent!!
Shes running like a dream!
