Title: 97 VR6 GTI: Can't shift into gear when engine is running
Post by: HicHic on 05 November 2012, 05:09
I started the car this morning and the shifter won't shift into any gear.  When the engine is off, it shifts fine.  I also noticed that there is no "click" when I push the clutch down all the way.  Before this incident, I could always hear a faint click sound when I push the clutch all the way.  I guess it's an indication that it's pressed all the way down.  I don't hear that click anymore.

This is a 97 VR6 GTI.  Hope to hear from you guys soon, thanks!

Clutch release bearing? Start it up when its in gear, if it starts trying to move and making crunch noises that could be it. Doesnt matter whether the pedal is pushed in or fully unloaded.
Release bearing is cheap but the labour is the same as getting the clutch and cable replaced so you may aswell do it all at once if you havnt had it done before. Unless you do it yourself.

Let us know what the outcome is

Yep similar thing happened to me. I smashed the spring on the pressure plate, where the release bearing was.
