Well yesterday started up my GTi and something flashed up on dash about coolant being low then a flashing icon on dash.
Looked at coolant bottle today and couldn't believe how low it was.
Had car serviced beginning of August at VW dealers and coolant was at minimum mark, which they topped it to max.
So thought everything was ok now this
So taking car to dealers first thing tomorrow morning.
4 months and to lose that amount of coolant somethings so not right.

Pull the dipstick out and see if the oil on it is a milky colour.
Check your cars carpets are not wet.

Just checked Snoopy, and no there is no milky colour on oil on dipstick, also carpets are not wet.

Hey Grey (shame about the team )
Some of us, including me, had this issue after a year or so of owning the Mk6 GiT. And the main reason was that the water pump was faulty and needed replacing, which the dealers do under warranty.
This may be the case with yours too

I was just about to post the same issue, my coolant light came on about a month ago was about the same level as your picture so topped it up. About 2 weeks later below the min line. Topped it up 2 weeks ago and its half way between max and min line. I think i have a leak.
Just great im out of warranty, just had the air intake pipe oil leak problem fixed which cost me as warranty has run out, my GTI has only done 33,000 miles. Rapidly loosing faith in the MK6 engine.

The faulty water pump issue is known to VW, so it is worth enquiring whether your local dealer can replace as it saves them a common-communication i.e. a honest 'hands-up' or worst still a recall. No harm in asking....

I think ill give them a call, see what response I get. Fingers crossed.

LOL @ team  I know Red
I took my Golf into dealers today, and told them what happened.
They topped up coolant and i'm booked in to have it checked out
monday.
Paul as Red says no harm in asking  give em a call, good luck.

Car booked in on Friday, definately leaking. Topped it up 3 times now and its below the minimum line again. Seems to be one thing after another at the minute, not great on a June 09 car with 34000 miles on the clock.

Seems to be a bit of a pattern occuring here , mines a September 09 car and i'm having a few problems,
Already had my water pump done,
Now the warranty has ran out i think these are going into self destruct mode :undecided:
(Been basically trouble free for 3 years)
-
Definitely a water pump issue as I had mine replaced (in May). The low coolant light kept coming on the dashboard; my car is Sep 09 registered.
-
I will make sure i mention on Friday when i drop the car in that so many other people seem to be having the same problem. Im getting annoyed that everything seems to be going wrong just after my warranty has run out.
Im still waiting for the final outcome of my complaint about my oil leak to VW UK, and whether they are going to reimburse me for the cost of the repair.
-
I'm sure VW will honour the water pump failure out of warranty, it is a known problem to them,
Have a look at this thread to name but a few that has had it done

Ill make sure i mention the problem so many others seem to be having with the leaking water pump, see what response i get.
-
Well my water pump is leaking, surprise surprise. Garage have hardly ever seen this problem they said, £331 to change it as its a 4 hour job.
VW called me today and will reimburse me 40% of my last problem of the oil leak, so overall a pretty expensive month.
Not happy with the reliability, think it may be time to change brand

That is crap mate, i can't believe they said they have hardly heard of this problem
its all over the internet that the mk6 has a water pump problem, VW must do this under warranty as a goodwill gestgure ?
The dealer claims back his expenses through Volkswagen anyway ! (prob at a cheaper rate tho)
I would get the warranty manager from the dealers to call Volkswagen and ask them for a goodwill.
Or ring VW customer services and tell them your not happy that you are getting charged for this
After a quick search i found this on one site alone,
Copy and paste these links, find some more and email it to manager at the dealers and see what he says then ?

The water pump failed on my 2012 GTI after 300 miles............ first week of ownership. Quality product!
-
So who makes it Bosch?
-
Well my faith has been partially restored in VW, i have just spoken to the service manager at VW Boston, and after some work on his half with VW UK my final bill for the new water pump is £84 plus VAT rather than £328.
Also a refund of 60% on the oil leak job a few weeks back that cost me £227, which was put towards the water leak.
So it pays to complain, alot happier today.
-
Considering that yours is outside the warranty period, you have negotiated well Paul.
But, I can't help but think that if you stood your ground a little longer (and despite that yours is only just outside the warranty period, and this being a very common problem which VW are fully aware of) you may have had the remedial works conducted without any expense to you.
Anyhoo, you're all sorted now pal

Your probably right, but I just wanted it sorted in the end. So hopefully now its all back to normal running after my 2 problems. I can get the remap and Milltek done now ,lets call it an early Christmas present, let the good times roll
-
Common issue on these engines I'm afraid. Don't be surprised if it goes again! (Hopefully within a year of you getting it fitted, so it's covered!).
A good mate is an ex-Audi, current VW, tech and said that the EA888 engine is horrendous for it. Started seeing it while at Audi, then it was rife when he worked at VW and that engine was used for the Mk6 GTI.
-
From what i have read, someone had posted that VW changed to a revised version of the water pump. So hopefully this issue is sorted now, but only time will tell.

I believe this to be true.

Looks like a trip to the dealers for me also. I started getting a smell which I thought was probably the oil leak problem. It didn't smell like coolant, more like hot oil. I checked yesterday for the oil leak around the DV and turbo area and found none, then noticed the coolant bottle has moved from max to just above min in less than 1500miles.
-
Sorry to here that, just had mine changed on an 09 GTI with 33000k on the clock, i was out of warranty. Its a £300 job but managed to get some of it paid for as a good will after complaining.
-
Mines still under warranty so it should be ok. More of a pain in the @rse that it should happen with only 6900 miles on the clock that's irritating me. Plus the fact I have to leave it in the dealerships "care"
-
I have had 2 water pumps replaced in 45,000kms, the first one at 15,000kms and the second at 45,000kms. The second pump was just within the 3 year warranty, but I had to wait for 2 weeks for the new pump as a revised pump had been issued and the dealer was told by VW not to fit the old model water pump. This was in early November.
Both times the only sign of a leak was the low coolant level in the expansion tank, no noises or puddles under the car.
-

OMG I forgot about this post.
Well took my car to dealers in the evening and they took it so
they've got it for the next day.
Gave me a 12 plate VW beetle with an awesome stereo
(fender premium soundpack) as a courtesy car.
Well they had my car for the whole day then phoned me
up in the evening saying it was ready and that I can pick it.
When I got there, she said it wasn't the water pump (cause they had
ordered one just in case it was)
But in fact it was a coolant pipe going into the engine.
And that they had to take the turbo off to get to it.
And it took 5 hours to complete the job.
Well its been over 2 months since I had the job done and have been
keeping an eye on the coolant level, and have just checked again
and the coolant level is still at the max mark.
So I think the problems has now been sorted.

The thought of n/e dealers doing this repair also scares me just thinking about it. :undecided:

Well they've done it and theres been no problems so far.

I still haven't taken it in yet. I'll have to ring them and get it done but I'm with Snoopy, I dread giving them the car.

Checked my coolant today and it was half way between max and min markers. This is fine obviously but I swear the level was higher the last time I checked. Will be keeping a close eye on it and hoping I have no water pump issues
