Hi all.... Im new to the golf gti forum. I bought a 1996 golf gti 8v about a year ago after having a couple of other golfs. Iv spent some time giving it a good clean up as it was looking a little sorry. Now i want to do some engine mods to give the 8v gti some more power. Not talking big money and its going to be a long term project so doesnt have to be ideas of do the mods in quick time. Look forward to your ideas......

Nothing. You cant really do anything THAT worthwile. Cam, airbox something like that. Gains are very very little and can be expensive.
Try the search function too. Been covered a hell of alot

pound for pound and abf 16v transplant makes the most sense and will be worth morelong term.
if you want to slowly fettle the 8v only cheap mods are full exhaust, derestricting the inlet to the inbox as its like a pea shooter, chip and cam. all of them add up to diy engine conversion if not more purchased new.

When I had my mk3 8v the only mod I put in was a k&N panel filter.
There is absolutely no point spending money trying to get more power out of this engine. It will cost a fortune with only little gains.
Best bet is to leave it standard and save your cash buddy! It's a great little engine for daily driving I found.

Best thing I did was change the cam.

Best thing i did was save the money
remove the crap 8v
Fit Audi S3 engine and big turbo
in other words, dont waste your cash on the 8v lump, leave as is or replace with something else

people that buy mk3 8v golfs do not have that sort of money. Tell him how much you have spent on it.
if he had the money you spent on yours he wouldn't be buying a mk3 golf 8v

he's asking how to make his 8v faster not engine swap..
go for intake, exhaust, chip, cam

& a light weight flywheel.

Well, by the sounds of it I'll keep the pennies in the old sky rocket n not bother with any engine mods for the old 8v. I bought it cheap to use daily but wanted a little extra out of the engine. Im starting to think maybe sell on n head back to a VR6 !!!

Sell it and buy something quicker, makes a lot more sense in the long run.

go for intake, exhaust, chip, cam
for the cost of that, he could buy a cheap vr6 donor car

well the biggest point thats been missed here. and should be the biggest deciding factor
whats the shell like for ROT.
if its a minter, then engine swap could be the way to go. as per Mr Bads suggestion :lipsrsealed:
if its a rot box, flog it on and get a decent 16v or VR6

^^^^ this is true
also depends how much u love the car and is it worth it (to you) to take it to the next level
16v or VR conversion can be done for the price of a tatty donor (£400 or less)
