right, after a bit of research i think the circlip holding the axle into the tripple roller assembly has came off and the shaft is lying loose in the boot.

does this sound about right

Yes that sounds right!

And to undo the bolts put 2 wheel bolts back in the hub and use a breaker bar to hold the hub while you crack off the bolts. Will need an extra pair of hands though.

You sure its M8 and not M10. Most 1.8T's and 1.9Tdi's are M10.

And yes they do but its called a spline  Have to buy a set though.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_168943_langId_-1_categoryId_255215#tab1

Saves you taking the M8 back when its the wrong size.

could be m10 as well m8 as im following the the guide on vortex http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3344208-DIY-Blown-CV-Boot-Replacement-and-inspection.

just that a 8mm hex key fitted but dont wanna run the risk of rounding the bolts off and having to stop work once again to wait on ordering more stuff lol

right, had a quick bash with the 8mm hex bit that fit quites snugly using breaker bar as mentioned to stop the shaft turning.

thing is the full joint is rotating round the shaft as i try to cravk the nuts, any other ides before i cut into my boot :(

Got a strap wrench or a pair of stilsons to hold on to the shaft?

i think the shafts disconnected from the assembly so i dont think thatl do any good m8, the full inner joint is rotating, thinkin i might need to cut into thoe put to try and counterhold it somehow.

popping to halfords just shortly for the spline set tho, see what else they might have

Stick the gear box in reverse should stop it from rotating.

axle reinstalled along with circlip, just need to grease up, reassemmble n put back on, Happy Days :)

had to use a puller to remove the assembly from the splined shaft, other than that, very simple job id say
