Title: I've been an idiot - car has been clocked!!
Post by: evereddy on 30 October 2012, 18:33
Just recently bought a 2000 mk4 tdi - 90bhp. Car looks very clean and drives very well. I just changed cambelt, front anti roll bar bushes and waterpump/coolant.  Car came with receipt for 4 new tyres (340 quid) and nearly new brake pads all round.

Long story short there was v limited service history so bought it for 1200 quid which I thought good considering. Mileage shows 108k as does recent MOT certificate..

Mate of mine suggested going on VOSA and looking at what previous MOT issues arose etc. To my horror I see that prior the last MOT (july 2012) the car over the last 5-6 years had racked up 165k!!!

I feel such a dick as had sworn I'd never buy a car with no/limited history. The guy I bought it off privately I think was genuine but had only had car 6 months and reason for selling on was legit.

Now I'm in denial and convincing myself that 'these cars go on forever' and 'it only cost 1200 so why lose too much sleep'

I've just thrown 400 quid at it sorting cambelt, waterpump etc, but anything else I should look to do as car is clearly high mileage!? That said mpg is awesome compared to mk3 gti and apart frm few small cosmetic issues it looks/drives great!

My girlfriend will absolutely castrate me if she ever finds out though as money tight!

Thoughts/help/sympathy appreciated (?) Or should I just not worry so much - its a Golf right?!!

Cheers

Its a diesel.  If it runs well and aint too shabby then forget about it and enjoy some happy motoring.
If you aint going back to the seller about it, then I guess you already made your mind up?
For your peace of mind perhaps get the mileage corrected back up and pretend it all never happened

.   Didn't see to much mileage in going back to previous owner (excuse the pun)!  Buyer beware etc....any other high mileage 'must do's' that I should consider?

Feel a little calmer after the last couple of posts! Cheers guys ! Still kicking myself though...

Annoying... Definitely! But one to just take on the chin, as diesel VW's are built to last!! Ironically, I found out that my boss used to have a mk4 TDI (100bhp I think he said) and he got the mileage up to 250,000 before trading it in! The little beast still worked, but he wanted the mk6 golf diesel.

German built!
