It certainly won't go like a VR but there are some decent systems or just back boxes out there that sound good, i run a scorpion stainless cat-back system on mine and its quite deep sounding but not loud, others will prefer jetex/magnex etc.

How about a modified airbox for some free induction noise?

A decent backbox from Magnex/Jetex/Scorpion/Remus etc and a straight through pipe to replace the "suitcase" silencer for a little more noise. Leave the cat and the other middle box in and it won't be stupid loud. Can pick up something cheap second hand from here or eBay, I got a nearly new Remus box for £37 posted!

Removing centre box makes em really chav sounding

Did it on mine when it was a 8v. Had a magnex system which was very quiet till I removed the box

You could hear my induction kit also

Sorry to jump in here but.. While you guys are on this one.. i don't like my standard exhaust system either, it's pretty crap infact, i have a new 'tyre & exhaust centre' back box but that'll fall apart again after a year as they tend to do..

Mine also has resonating waves in the exhaust at certain revs, i don't know if that's normal with these motors but to me it adds to the feeling of more crapness!

What do you go for as a good quality full replacement system without particularly wanting a performance job or any added noise.. ?

Cheers all

Thanks for the pointer.

i trawled through ebay for a few weeks and got a longlife system for £80, ive had a fair few systems and it sounds great nothing like the chav crap of a piper system on my old 1.8t. combine that with a larger inlet on the rather restrictive air box and vent it to some cold air from the bumper and it should sound noticeably raspier.

I'm also interested in the sound of a decat section

If you just want a bit more sound then get this over the decat so you won't have to swap it out for the MOT.

I normally buy decat pipe just for the sound it makes.

As long as you have two boxes its fine.

Just backbox and straight pipe is too loud

My 528i smashed all my cars pulling away.

Fall throttle starts with no wheel spin!!

The 330 was not giving it anything if you pulled away

Just think of the physics

Yep, my 16yr old 328 was far superior to my current vr performance wise. It just never made 'the noise'

Ah yes, bmw didnt do a 3litre hire car model

You clearly dont know what you raced on a public road

A 1.8 honda leaves a vr6. Id expect a new 1.8 litre beemer to do the same.

But all said, your an idiot for racing on the road & thinking your car is faster because it sounds fast

My best mate had a 330ci. Im finding it hard to believe you genuinely thought you would be faster off the line. He probably sat back, had a little giggle and cruised past you listening to Radio 2 whilst your sat there listening to your engine make noises it shouldn't whilst hitting redline in every gear.

Crikey.

I had a 2.0 8v the only thing it was faster at was being slower than all over cars...

even a 316 would be faster!
