Title: Random knocks from the front end?
Post by: N4SOP on 27 October 2012, 12:29
I have a few unidentified knocks coming from the frond end when going over bumps. I know some are caused by the car sitting too low as the drive shaft rubs on long fast corners.

I'm not 100% sure this will fix all the issues though so would appreciate any info on what else to look out for. The car has a recent MOT so it shouldn't be anything that it would fail on....

Any help would be great :)

anti roll bar bushes/drop links are usually the main culprit

It would also be worth checking your top mounts.

Check the lower arm bushes, Mine were completely shot, The wish bone was knocking against the subframe.
Also loud knocks heard when braking very hard. I could hold the wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and move it back and fourth, The bush was more or less turning inside out.

Happened to me, only repaired this last week. It was the front shocks, they were shot. So while changing shocks did top mounts and bearings as well. does it sound like a rumble or just knocking?

Thanks for all the help :)

On initial inspection it looks like the suspension on the whole could do with a freshen up. The coilovers are tired and the bushes I can see look old.

Can anyone suggest a set of budget coil overs and the best place for replacement bushes?

I'll hopefully get it all sorted over the next couple of weeks, if things go to plan.

Ryan - It's a couple of random knocks generally. The only rumble is when the driveshaft rubs in the ARB.

Considering how good the bodywork and general mechanics are the suspension is shocking. Looks like most of it belongs on the titanic with all the surface corrosion!

I may just bite the bullet and refresh the whole front end, if it doesn't cost too much.
