Title: 3" exhaust
Post by: xtetx on 26 October 2012, 08:32
My car is on the road after a week of public transport and long nights.
I need to ask you lads who are running the 3" exhaust from USA a few questions.
When i am in 1st gear and its under a bit of load, when i change to 2nd gear my backbox seems to be banging underneath, rather annoying, did anybody else get this problem?

Secondly, jesus will it quiten down? haha i really hope it does.

Here is a few pictures anyway:

A few things have been adjusted since taking the pictures.

Any comments and help would be appreciated.

Your missing the middle exhaust support.
You should have a black support bolted to the bottom of the car which holds the centre of the exhuast up using two rubber blocks.

Looks good though.

My 3inch exhuast also knocked on the rear valance but as you know I had a Bora. It was pretty quiet on idle but once on full chat it spat flames and was pretty loud. Sounded awsome though, I miss the noise

haha i need to put my 45 degree downturn on then haha, currently running without it on, should have put it on before we put the exhaust on.
Its on the road now though so i need to tweak it and get it sitting right, there is quite a big difference going from a 1.6 - 1.8t!

took the DV off and also the SAI! need a pannel filter for the chatter now haha

don't remove your DV.

it's a foolish idea.

I'd imagine from the 'chatter' comment, that he is attempting to create a compressor stall situation.

Of course, I imagine this will be to fool the street racing opposition into thinking his DV is broken and thus lulling them into a false sense of security!

Yeah a guy who helped me said to take it off to stop loosing boost pressure until I get a forge one!
And we blocked it off!
And I'm not some sort of bad boy racer haha I do 60 on the motorway!
Is this a bad idea, I'm new to this coming for a 1.6!

afraid so mate, removing the DV gives you compressor stall, which on a tiny turbo like the ko3 will do it much harm indeed.

The DV is there for a pretty good reason. I'd get one fitted asap.

haha, cheers dude

At the start of my 1.8T ownership, many many moons ago, I drove around for 6 months with an induction kit and a broken DV, I thought the compressor stall sound was normal, and to be fair, it's an AWESOME noise.

I was absolutely gutted when I fitted my forge DV and it went 'woosh' instead :(

Everyone has to learn somewhere :)

See how it goes but a 3" exhaust is never going to be quiet. You will probably get used to it though.
If you want to change, give me a shout as I have an old miltek lying about still.

Woww thats wierd having said that my Bora was literally a custom made 3" downpipe to decat right through to the back box which then reduced to 2.5".
On idle it was pretty much silent and an full chat sounds amazing!
On the rolling road it didnt struggle at all, I had a nice smooth line right through the rev range upto redline.

It might be a good idea to buy a reduced size back box, maybe 2.75" or very minimum 2.5".

Im pretty sure these do reduce to 2.5 at the backbox, Deffinately the tail pipe that exits the backbox is 2.5.
My pals one has got quiter with use, I think its due to the carbon building up in the silencer. Very quiet on idle and not to loud at full throttle
