I'd like to retain my Mk4's comfortable ride as much as possible, but also have a subtle drop on my 15'' rims (may or may not change later).
Can anyone recommend what set-up would suit my needs? ...............Thinking about it, perhaps the coilover route might not be for me seems I don't want to be sitting on the floor (my E30 Touring is slammed). Ideas appreciated.

Your kinda answering your own question.
Maybe look up a 30mm approx spring and damper set up.... wait for the mk4 boys who knows what set up works well with the overweight lump

Coilovers will probably have the harshest ride but you'll be able to set the ride height exactly how you would like. Lowering springs on standard shocks will probably be a bit bouncy and will reduce the lifespan of them (slightly, if at all).
A decent 40mm matched shock and spring setup is what id probably go for.

Leigh: Yeah, I realised when I was typing that static is probably best for my needs. Thanks though ;)
Jim: Coilovers do seem to be quite reasonable these days on the 'bay. Yeah, I'd definitely change both shocks and springs.
If I lower 40mm I was reading somewhere on here that there was something else that would also need changing..........I can't remember what it was now. BMs have been my thing for 9 years + so VW's all new to me...............

A nice a ~40mm drop on a decent set of springs and shocks LOOKS and performs well. My only qualm I have with going for this setup is I want to go lower :lipsrsealed:
Did you say you are running 15s?!
-
Cheers, Scar. Yeah, running the standard 15'' alloys right now. The car's new to me so my money is going into servicing which it badly needs, plus I've just had to fork out a load of money to make it road-legal in France (the cost of alloys in fact!!!).

Your probably thinking of the anti roll bar. At 40mm you'll be fine

Lowering springs should be banned coilovers or go home :)
-
If it was me I'd still go for coilovers but a good set, drop it about 30/40mm and away you go. As your not going that low it will still be comfortable. Then if you ever want to go lower you can and not be out more money.
If you really want to go static a lot of people say that Bilstsin shocks and Eibach springs is about the best set up for the mk4. I did run Eibach spring for about a year and thought they where really good.

Cheers, guys - appreciate the feedback :)

Eibach are just as comfortable as standard but don't lower it enough.
Im down -40mm on bilstein shocks and koni springs, the front sits perfect but the back is still too high, will be coilovers for me when i can afford it
