Hi guys I've recently purchased a 02j shift tower off of a member on here and a set of golf gti 2001 gear shift and cables... Now i got it all out to look at it etc and tried fitting the gear cable ends over the shift tower where they clip on the the pivot balls but the cables ends are too small?
Now can I go to Tps and get some larger cable ends or have I been mis sold a part?
Cheers lee

There are two types of ends mate, circlip ends and snap fit ball ends. first things first make sure yours are both the same type.
If they're circlip ends, have you tried BOTH cables on both parts of the shift tower? the cable ends are different sizes on the fore/aft and left/right cables to make sure you don't get them wrong.

i would also like to no what bits that are needed as im finding it really hard to engage 1st sometimes and awesome gti say to upgrade to the later mk4 golf 02J tower/linkages as mine is an old AGU and has the old vw corrado 02a vr6 linkages.

I think I've got 3 spare shift towers and 2 shifters and cable units in the garage if you're interested mate

It doesn't matter what type it is. As long as it an 02j type and 5 speed, you can upgrade the relay lever and shift weight to the newer type with circlips. When you order the relay lever and weight they come with the new style bowden cable clips.
You can also use the TT shift weight to give a shorter throw.

Not true T-shirt, early 02J 5 speed boxes had an 02A style shift tower with vr6 style linkage. totally different shift tower on the box, and totally different shifter inside the car too. they changed in late 98 I believe.
To change to the later type, you need the complete shift tower from the box (the bit that goes inside the box housing, not just the weight). THEN you can either chose to use the standard shift weight or the TT one

I don't class those as 02J. I was talking about ball joint type. Hence why i chose "02J type" as apposed to 02A type

ah, I see what you mean now!
Agreed, so long as it's the 02J shift tower type (despite early 02J boxes confusingly having 02A towers), it can be ball joint or circlip style.
got ya (Y)
It's a very worth while upgrade. Not that difficult, and improves the shift action 100x over.

Another thing to watch out for is the shifter needs to be 5 speed if its from a golf/Bora/A3 etc.
The Gearbox bracket will put cables at wrong angle if its 6 speed.

Prawny I mail about the towers and shifters you said you had for sale maybe?
