Title: Tyre ware help
Post by: Deefadog on 13 July 2005, 13:07
I have just order 2 new Toyo Proxes T1-r for the fronts on my golf as the current ones have worn down on the outside edge!

Question is, what would cause only the ouside of the tyre to ware?  As it's got 215/40R16 (non standard for the car) - The previous owner told me pressure should be at 30psi but i am worried this could be wrong!

Don't want my new ones to got the same way!

You need what I need 4 wheel laser alignment AND geometry check which only a handful of garages do and my localish one can't get car on the bloody ramps even with the coilovers wound right up fookin thing too low was the cry from the spanner monkeys! negative camber is the bane of lowering cars.
Because as your car body goes lower the tops of the wheels stick out because of angles and physics and monkey magic! need a good garage to set it up for you. Let me know when you find one!!!

Make sure that whoever does your alignment checks/adjusts the camber first as there are a lot of places that haven't got a clue , often not even bothering to check/it let alone adjust it
I assuming its either a mk2 or mk3 ,and if they say that there is no more camber adjustment left and that it's still out of tolerance ,VW do different slightly thinner bolts (18mm heads rather than the standard 19mm) to give more movement on the slots

Hope this helps

Maybe Mk2GTI2.016v thought you were refering to camber rather than toe  :undecided: ( I assumed you were refering to toe ?)

put 34 to 36 psi in em.  depending on how hard you like em.

a big wide tyre like that can a higher psi.  30? who ever told you that?!?!?

Any good branch of stapletons tyres do full geometery check and laser tracking even on lowered vehicles used em a while back and they sorted mine out perfect, free re test after 1 month too.

I paid about £45 but i was spending loads on 17" rubber when they were scrubbing but it really is cured and they spent a good while doing it properly. Also the handling  improved no end  because everything set properly to correspond with the lowered ride height.
