Title: Cutting out!!

The car isn't idling right and keeps surging up and down the revs sometimes cutting out!

Then wen slowing down if I put the clutch down to change gear the car cuts out and then kicks back in when the clutch is lifted!

Any ideas what's wrong

It's an '88 8v GTI.

Cheers for the advice found a few solutions I'm going to try.
