Title: Planning the first detail for my 13 year old car!
Post by: bobbarley on 20 October 2012, 10:04
Ok, so my Golf hasn't been polished or detailed in any way for 13 years, as you can imagine the metallic black isn't quite at it's best!

Looking to give her a full detail starting from scratch.  At the moment it's full of stone chips which I'll have to fill in and then sand down flush with the surface.

What sort of pads and polish should I be looking to use to tackle 13 year old paint that'll be sanded down in places?  I imagine it will need to be something with a lot of cut?

Thinking of buying the polisher along with the Sonus 1, 2, 3, 4 kit.  Seems to everything I'll need.

No, just the last 4.5 years.  If you'd seen the paint when I got it you'd know the previous owner spent 7 years or so using nothing but car washes though.  The paint doesn't just have swirls, it's one huge swirl lol.

This is the kit I started with, worked really well on the VAG paint.

It gave me these results

Looks great mate, same kit I'm looking at just the next machine up.

I'd much rather do it myself as I'll finally have my own house and garage to do it in.  Be pleased if I can get results like that

Thanks lads, Guts of 2 days.

to answer you question better you'll need a good range of pads and a few different grads of polish as I believe you'll not know whats going to work till you start.

One of the reasons I like the kit I linked to before is it comes with 4 levels of polish, I start at 1 and work up to 4.  Each polish has an accompanying pad to go with it

The Menzerna will work reall well on the hard VAG

I don't believe in the whole pads and accompanying polish.
Yea you start at one and work up but it's more like you start of with the lest CUT pad and polish if it don't work you then step it up a pad but stay with the same polish till you get a level of finish your after. So you could end up with a low cut polish and heavy cut pad working. Once you get on to it you'll start to know what pads/polish work well together.

It's going to be interesting.  I've got to fill in and sand down 9 or 10 BIG stone chips, about 5mm wide in places, one has gone rusty.  Plus the mirrors and front valance I've got to re-spray first as well.

Yea it's a real skill. Don't forget a wee dab of clear coat on top.

would recommend the DAS6-pro... its the best DA i have ever tried, apart from the rupes bigfoot but even then i would probably plump for the DAS6-pro if i was to get one
