Title: Sounds like exhaust blow, but it isnt (seems common) AGG
Post by: Turbotezz on 17 October 2012, 20:59
Ok, I've tried many things and looked in many places but still cant find an answer.
2.0l 8V AGG in mk3 gti
Under any sort of load, i get what sounds like an exhaust blow from near an exhaust port. Sound doesn't really vary in serverness under light to high load. happens from cold to full temp (all the bloody time).

Have tried the ignition timing, no change
Ran a BG44K to clean the engine, no change
ran it on VAG-COM

Got the master tech to look at it at work. He seems to think it could be turbulent air with something to do with the charcoal filter.

I have googled it many times and found plenty of threads with the same symptoms and no outcome or answer.
I don't want to just live with it. Its 100% not an air leak in the exhaust, no cracks in the manifold, no leaks from gaskets.

Pleease if someone has had this problem and found a fix, do tell

Double check the exhaust manifold, they commonly crack on these and cause irregular and hard to find irritating noises.
As for the carbon canister - bin it!

I'm very sure its not a crack in the manifold, many tests have been done and its defo not that.

Put the standard airbox on and its made no difference.
Pulled the plug out of the solenoid for the charcoal filter, no difference.

Run it on VAG-Com for a bit and all values are as they should be and no out of the ordinary operating conditions.

Could this then be a collapsed CAT? Anyone in the midlands got a decat kicking around i could borrow or even sell me?

Your air box may have been drilled wing side.
