Hello people
wicked site by the way...wondered if you could help a pissed off MK1 1986 GTI cabby owner:
my car sputters like f**k when you turn it over cold...I have to leave the key on 'fire' for around a minute to start it! then the whineing started in the back...this is intermitent and the car (which formerly worked fine when eventually warm) now stalls and cuts out regually......
I need it to commute and have little money so im seeking a budget solution..
any of you had same or simular problems?

My Cab splutters a bit on start up bit runs sweet as a nut (are nuts sweet?)after a couple of minutes. It's almost as if the automatic choke is not doing its job. As it's not a real problem and hasn't manifested into anything worse, I've left it.

If you have whining coming from the back of the car then I would suggest your fuel pump is on its way out. Try removing the supply pipe and having a look at the inlet strainer. It may be that it is semi blocked making the pump work harder.

I totally agree with Rich, the whining on the back must be the fuel pump. As for your car Adam, your cold start valve is probably a bit suss if the car splutters from cold.

Is it a big job to fix? I've never had to do it before ???

Look for the fifth injector mounted on the inlet manifold.
