Title: mk4 TDI smells damp! *update*
Post by: hamps on 17 October 2012, 09:15
Since the rain my 02 plate smells damp!

I have checked all the carpets and the boot area, and replaced the roof aerial gasket, i also checked the rear screen washer pipe hadn't popped off as this happened on my sister in laws one and made it wet inside!

There is no obvious signs but is there any common things I should be looking at?

Thank you

No idea. Check all door sills, sun roof if you have one. Really don't know... :undecided:

mine had a ltle phase of leaking when it rained. the passenger side floor would be soaked and the back passenger side too. turned out it was the little tray thing that sits abouve the pollen filter had been broken last time it was refitted so water was going down through the pollen filter into the car. i simply masticked it back together and job done.
it might be good to change the pollen filter while you have the top off.
another thing is the internal drains block up, theres a way to clear them something to do with tweaking the black rubber nipple things but im unsure as i didnt have to do this

The tray above the pollen filter is fine and looks as though no water has been entering here so thats good, but I had all the seats out for a clean and found where it is damp, under the drivers seat???

Could it be the door rubber? no visible splits anywhere.

Anyone help?

Thank you  :nerd:

I drive 600 miles a week in my 2002 GT TDi 150bhp and recently, the floods and rain led to my footwell on drivers side front and rear having water in.  I have a sunroof so that was my initial idea but after 2 weeks being sealed with tape, water still got in.  After several wild goose chases, I finally checked the rubber nipples that sit in the door frame - as soon as I squeezed the driver door one with thumb and forefinger - a torrent spewed out despite no rain for 2 days!  The rear door one also was full.  Over time they had just got blocked.
I have a tool for cleaning my camel-back water bottle which is basically a thin brush on 1 metre of flexible cable - I fed it up the nipple and it had a huge effect bringing out tons of shi*!  Since then - more rain but no more damp carpet.
