How many of you guys are rocking alarm systems in your houses? Currently looking into home security. Has anyone with an alarm actually been burgled, or do you think seeing an alarm on the house is enough of a deterrent to keep burglars at bay?
-
I don't think they make a jot of difference to be honest.

Depends where you live and what sort of house you own really. The majority of house burglaries are by drug addicts and undesirables, who are after quick cash from electrical goods and a getaway in your car. They are not intelligent enough to defeat any standard alarm, and not brave enough to do it whilst you are likely to be home. Obviously thats not true in all cases, and desperation will drive them to burgle a house with the owners at home. In most cases though, an alarm will deter them no end.
If you live in an middle/upper class area, with a home that breathes money though, these are the house of choice for the "career burglar". Any standard alarm will be studied, so they can revise ways to defeat it.
Alot of burglars will do recces prior to the attempt as well. They will knock on doors, and ask for a random person who doesn't live there or similar, just to scope you/your missus out to see if its worth it.
IMO burglaries are pretty uncommon in most areas, but you can only reduce the odds of it happening to you by fitting an alarm. As said above, even a cheap and basic alarm will put off the majority of the undesirables, but if a career criminal wants to gain entry to your home, they will.

As Above, the only decent alarms are the ones that are hooked up to a monitoring station who will inform the police BUT by the time someone arrives the burglars will be long gone as they are in and out in less than a minute in most cases.
The best deterrent is good secure locks on doors and windows and make access to the rear of your property difficult for intruders.

I have an evil cat which attacks anything that comes through/near the door or window.
This means I forgoe the alarm and trust my moggie
-
Burglar guards, nasty and unsightly but will keep them from coming through your windows. A friend in SA has just fitted some to his mothers place because they've had 2 attempted break-in's, though I'm shocked they didn't have burglar guards anyway!
Everyone I knew had a Trellidor or variant there of and some also had armed response from private companies who had patrols in the area most of the time.

physical security > pretend security (I.E Alarms that will take the police however long until they have someone available to go investigate)

A big loud dog!
-
They'll always look for the easy option.
So, if your neighbour doesn't have a visible alarm and you do, it's more likely they'll hit your neighbours house.
-
Basically I'm trying to decide whether it's worth buying a proper alarm for the house, £127.99. Or whether a replica box on the front wall for £14 would be just as effective a deterrent.
-
if you are worried buy a decent alarm might get you a discount on your insurance if the area is bad for break-ins,we only use our 1 when we are out an have the dog with us
-
Well crime wise it's ranked in the highest 10% of the country, I'm unsure what type of crime it relates to though. Having said that, all of Manchester is ranked right up there, so many pikies!
We're going to hsve a dog as well, so hopefully that should make a difference

Last time I checked 'proper' alarms cost more than £130!
Just put a security light on the front of the house that also has a video camera which records to an SD card.
£80 from Screwfix.
-
Lighting up crims is always a better deterant than a flashy box!
How long would a SD card last?

To get a discount on your insurance premium you need the alarm to be fitted and annually serviced by SSAIB or the likes. Even so its nothing high; 1-10% discount.
Oh and it HAS to be alarmed at night and/or when the house is unoccupied every time. The moment you don't, you're not insured.
(Just did my training on this)

Yeah even if I had an alarm I wouldn't mention in for insurance purposes, I wouldn't be buying a really expensive super approved one. Plus I'd never use it when actually at home.
Plus home insurance is really cheap anyway. Alarm is more for peace of mind, and to deter thieves when I'm away from the house.

Where abouts in mcr are you buddy?

The new house is in Newton Heath
-
Touch wood, s'alright round here, but I can be away for a whole weekend or mid week etc, so for piece of mind I have an alarm with autodialler that'll call my moblibily.
-
Seeing as i work for a security company (Secom) il can definetely vouch for physical security taking priority over anything else. Bar grilles, shutters, collapsable gates, window films etc etc. Stop the f**k*rs getting in then you dont need to worry about scareing the intruders off with flashing lights and sirens. Smoke screens are good fun though.
-
I think it's safe to say I WON'T be barring my windows
-
Internal collapsible gates are quite popular and unintrusive when pushed back out of use.
-
Your better off investing in some good cctv cameras to deter people. You even better off in investing in some good locks on the door.
-
Electric perimeter fencing works wonders
-
If i lived somewhere that i had to have bars on the windows or shutters i'd move very quickly !

You can put in up to 2GB and it just overwrites the earliest files when it fills up.
-
Do your research some wireless units have some big ole securities holes :lipsrsealed:
Any visable deterent is good IMO.
You can buy speakers that plug in the door bell and it barks when its pressed
