Hay guys this is my first post on hear, I bought my little 8v gti a few months back now and have only just had chance to drive it due to stupidly braking my back the day I got it, but that's a story for another day!
So back to the point I took her for a spin yesterday and got the standard belch of white smoke kicking out the back when giving it the beans on the A3, so got home and did a quick compression test, reading came back all fine, so I'm 99% sure it the valve steam sills? Any other views would be awesome.
So just to get it straight the smoke starts when your putting the hammer down and let off for a second ( normally to let some plonker with no mirrors or indicators cut you up) the put me foot down again and a massive cough of white smoke, let of again and it stops!!! Also I noticed some oil ha spurted out of the breather bit on the rocker cover????
Any help would be awesome also is there anywhere local to Guildford that would be able to fix it if that is the case? Thanks again Tom (bushy123)

Sounds more like rings to me. Not valve stem seals.
Stem seals usually leak slower and give blue smoke.
-
Happy days thanks dude, wouldn't that reflect in poor compression in the compression test? Also any ideas on cost if it is the rings? Thanks again
-
Depends. There are different rings.
-
How many miles are on it? And what oil is in it?
-
58k genuine with all the paper work to prove it, but no idea about the oil??? Do you think I should drop it out and change filter? If so what oil should I be using and are there any tricks of the trade I should know with the oil change? Thanks for your input.
-
Give the car a good service some decent oil .. Mine used to smoke heavy on start up then clear but as said if you giveing it beans then smoke does sound like worn rings .. Does it use any oil ?
-
Proof that a low mileage car isn't necessarily the best choice.
-
Drop the oil and stick a 10w40 semi synthetic oil plus genuine or bosch oil filter. When refilling dont fill to full mark, run it at halfway. Clean the breathers out also. And then see how it goes, it could also just have had a very easy life and be coked up. Couple of good scalps after the oil change will help clear it
what was the compression you were seeing?
-
Awesome thanks guys not to sure if its using a grate deal of oil as I've only driven it about 25 miles so far, guess it must be using some as the smell is defo that horrible burning oil smell! It will have to wate till next week now due work ! Compression was running (12.7 - 12.7- 12.6 - 12.7) so only the 3rd chamber was running slightly low??? Or at least I think 12 is good as I'm a 2-stroke engineer and if a chain saw was running that kind of compression you would sure know it when you tried to start the bugger! Any ideas on what compression it should be running???
-
180-200psi is 8v compression so you are within the limits just but that could be down to gauge inaccuracy also, fact they are all the same or thereabouts is a good sign
try doing a compression test when stone cold and one when up to temp and see if there is a difference
-
Did a stone cold compression test turning over for exactly the same time as the warm 1 readings came back at ( 12.2-12.3-12.3-12.3 ) so slightly less than the warm 1 but I expected that?
I then cleaned all the oil of the rocker cover and had a genural wipe about, and dissided to take it to work  on the way I couldn't help but try and brake it so I put my foot to the floor and after a 20 seconds the smoke started flying out the back so I eased off, when I got to work lifted the bonnet to find oil had blown out of the breather thing on the rocker cover and poured down on to the manifold, hence the smoke I guess!!! So any ideas??? Thanks for all the help so far.
-
what is the oil level reading on dipstick? you can get a new seal for the rocker cover breather

Fantastic thanks gambit you've been super helpful, do you know if you get any benefits from using 1 of those k&n style breather filters instead of having it feed back into the inlet?
Now I just got sort the bastard vacuum system out, I've got loads of pipes with screws stuffed in them :undecided: all good fun these old golfs haha!!!
-
the k&n filters dont make that much of a difference, you may get fumes in cabin also. but its an MOT failure to vent to atmosphere so you'd need to swap it back over for MOT unless you've a friendly MOT inspector.
the good thing about old golfs is they are simple to work on!
the vacuum system can be a pain on 8v's as people think theyll gain performance blanking certain parts. good topic here on it showing you the layout

Spot on mate, total legend! I've always had rados, and I've been told the mk2 is very similar ( and they are when it comes to running gear) but not on in the engine bay haha! Won't take to long and I should start to get my head around the little 8v. It's so much fun to drive much more fun than the corrardo.
-
compressions are fine. compression ratio of engine is 10:1 so under cranking upto 13 bar with a strong starter.
12.6 - 12.7 is pritty good the variation you mention is nothing to worry about.
just need to work out really if your engine is blowing by and blowing oily crud through the breathers or its getting past the rings, it sounds like to much smoke for valve stem seals.
is possible the rings may have stuck there are various snake oils that claim they can help with this or sometimes fresh oil and a good few days of booting it will cure it
-
Are you losing coolant?
-
12.7 bar is about 180+ psi so its all good average PSI would be around 165-175 depends on age and millage and if the car had work done to raise compression ratio!
Thats assuming you meant 12.7 bar and not 127 psi?
-
Whats the signs for worn valve guides?
-
valv guide issues tend to crop up around the 100 isk k miles
valves wobbel in the guided will cause poor seating but more noticale is the smoke, tends to kill the stem seals quicker and once thats gome more oil can get down the stem as te guide is sloppy
-
Hay lads thanks for all the input, I did a little test by taking the pipe off the crankcase breather on top of the rocker cover and blocking it up, turned the black valve to face away form my nice shiny manifold and then took her for a drive!!! Got home opened the bonnet to find oil all over the gear box??? so the leak is coming up through the breather on the rocker, witch says to me worn piston rings and getting to much crankcase pressure??? But my compression tests are sweet??? Can any1 explain the stuck ring and what it might mean^^^. Guna drop the oil and do a change this weekend I've got the rocker cover of and soaking in the chemical bath at work before I paint it so that should clear the metal filter in there!! Look forward to your answers.
-
id get yourself a new breather assembly, its fair chance its just banjo'd, its meant to be a one way valve allowing gas out but not fluid.
or at least get a lend of one of somebody local
do you know the history of the car? stuck ring is just that, its stuck so doesnt expand. you could try somehing like Forte Engine Flush but be warned flushing can do more worse than good if it dislodges big chunks of stuff especially if you dont know the history of the car.
drop the oil and stick in 10w/40 and do it halfway see does it still blow oil out. its odd ill give you that!
-
Me thinks too many cooks in the kitchen?
Take each logical step new breather for a start!
Compression good so rings are good as for excessive oil are you sure you just don't have a dodgy rocker seal?
Stem seals will cause excessive oil but you cannot confirm untill you strip and inspect so get the tool box out and inspect it???
No one on here can answer you unless you take the rocker off and head so you can do wet tests on piston chambers and inspect the valve stems. Either way closer inspection is needed to solve your woes!
-
Happy days, picking a new breather valve ( black disc ) up tomorrow, so I split the old 1 at work to find a rubber ballon like valve then under that a hard plastic cup like washer then a spring, the hard plastic 1 is broken in 1 place but all the way thorough, so I guess under pressure it would let oil through who knows???
I have the rocker cover off and have a brand new gasket, how do I do a wet test? And what do it test?
She is booked into the PHIRM on the 12th just for a good old look over and make me up a list of todo jobs!!! Hopefully it's not to long/ expensive so I can get on with some fun jobs like paint and power!!!
-
Wet test can only be done with head on a bench, you turn it upside down, close the valves down then fill chamber to level with petrol, if the level drops you have leaking valves.
Breather change coupled with oil change and take it from there!
