Hi guys,
Who can help me out....what is the standard diameter of our exhausttip on the MVI.
I am planning to take them a bit bigger.......... sheer looks.
I am in doubt between 90mm and the sometimes enormous looking 100 mm (Milltek stage II)
I ve googled like crazy .......before asking

Can you remove the tips on the Gti?

Can you remove the tips on the Gti?
With a hacksaw, yes.
Then fit what you want with the aid of a TIG/MIG welder!

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a back box with bigger tips?

Yepp, sawing and welding...now go out in the rain and measure your pipes...
(raining like there is no tomorrow overhere)

That depends on whether you want something noisier, non-standard, with potential insurance implications and something potentially warranty destroying.
If you have access to a TIG welder, you can buy a pair of stainless tips for £2-30 each off eBay and weld them on in a couple of hours - exhaust removed, tips cut off, new tips tacked on, exhaust fitted to check for fit, exhaust removed and tips seam welded up, then it re-fitted...all with the back of the car jacked up.
Far cheaper than a shiny (and expensive) replacement back box.

I swear they are 60mm, but I might be wrong.

No you could be right here....I somewhere read 63 mm but was not sure if they were talking about the 5 or 6 ...and I think the differ in size...
-
Well on the MKVI they are 80mm I find that way too small...probably just to make a difference to the R...
Anyway I have ordered the 100mm Milteks....that should do the job...especially after the ABT tuning those bigger tips are far more in place and as a bonus coming way out nicely with the standard cut-outs of the valance

Oh well both wrong.
-
We were only half wrong.....63 mm it is ......but only on the MKV
-
100mm is the size you want, looks oem but turned up a few notches
-
Yepp those are the ones..I ordered the GT-100 from Milltek
i am also busy with another mufler just to give it a little bit extra "noise" that is rather difficult because most mufflers give it too much in my opinion.

100 mm was a too big for my liking just a bit steep .....since I wanted to go for the OEM look I took 90 mm.
Believe it or not but the old exhausts (1 week old...ahum) fit into these.....
Tomorrow Abt
-
Very nice, looks like 90mm is a nice compromise.
-
So it is true, it does exist...
Looks great!!
-
Shame on you for not trusting a fellow GTI enthousiast.....
The truth is that I am at war with both photobucket and imageshack....I keep pressing the wrong buttons and forgetting passwords/usernames...arrrggghhhh....and not really bothered about it...
-
Erik - have you got any pics of it down off the ramps?
-
Not yet but I promise soon
-
As Promised...
Looks subtle but believe me ..the standard ones nearly fit into these ...and still you have your OEM-Look (Fox)
A "normal" GTI parked next to it reveals it all shockingly...

-
Very nice, however did your GTI badge drop off whilst at that garage?
-
Nope the dealer delivered the GTI with decals and logos despite my request to remove it...
So when I handed it in for Abt Tuning he did what he forgot to do.....
-
Hi, picture of the VWR exhaust that was fitted to my car, not sure of size tips as im away at work at the moment..
Ps: Dealer fitted R badge removed and replaced with standard GTI badge...

my milltek tips on the 35, i need to pull them in a bit when i get chance
-
Looking good....
-
Looks spot on pal
Does anyone know if the VWR exhaust would be made by milltek ?
-
Out of all of these I'm still drawn towards the Miltek due to the option of Ed35 tips and the adjustable tips, Wigit that looks bang tidy mate as always!
-
The Millteks look beautiful
What I did find that on photos they steal the show and are nobrainers...so I ordered the 100 mm.
..
however when I saw them in real life I was shocked (a matter of taste) by the dimensions.
Lucky for me I could swap them for 90 mm Fox...

My Blueflame also has adjustable tips for reference
-
I do not get the adjustable bit...
My new exhaust tips were first measured, sawed and fitted with a few weldings ...after a final look I approved (same protusion as the original ones) and with the final welding they were mounted in place with a small metal colar.

The Milltek is a modular design so the tips fit over the pipe and bolt on allowing you to set how far you want them to stick out, the Milltek grows a couple of centimetres when warm
-
But surely when they are finally adjusted they need to be welded otherwise they will be moving about in the future due to hot/cold...besides the practical reason I personally do not like a bolted look....a bit Halford-style

The Milltek has some really nicely engineered spring clips that are engineered to expand/contract
-
Okay did not know that...anyway they are the nicest tips around so quality should be top notch I expect
