Title: handbreak light
Post by: vwwvgolf on 13 October 2012, 16:19
hello all,
i know this is a common one, and ive searched but no answer.
got the car back from a full service yesterday so it had a error code scan but nothing came up for the brakelight.
its a 16v and just had new rear discs, pads and brake lines, and brake fluide service so cant be any of that.
they checked the handbrake switch and also the fluid cap but thats all working.
they recon its a loose connection somewhere.
anyone got any ideas where a loose connection could be??
thanks to any help

Remove the abs light pod ,see if the bulb is gone or been diconnected, is handbreak light on sometimes or all the time?

Handbrake light is always on. When I first got it it went off a couple of times but now always
The abs light defiantly connected looked not long ago . I'll check the bulb tommorow when it's light tho.

Would abs sensors come up on error scan tho??

Abs light should always come on for few seconds then go off again.

So bulb must be gone then? But if the bulb is working or not surly it would have come up on vag com still??

You would think that.
But since your abs light is not coming on and the handbrake light is staying on. This points to rear abs sensor

If you've had an ABS fault for some time the warning bulb may have burnt out.

just been out with the multi meter.

near side was showing reading of 1095
offside was showing reading of 1697

off side sensor needs doing then??

also had a look behind the abs light and gave it a poke and the abs light came straight back on.

still dont understand how it didnt come up in the fault scan tho??

But even tho you may have a faulty sensor. Handbrake light points to a problem with the biasing which is dangerous. So don't go heavy braking.

ah more possible issues lol. how would i go about checking if the bias system is working correctly?
is that somthing to do with the abs ecu??

Scan controller. If you replace sensors and the faults still don't clear, then it's the ABS ECU.
