Title: Mk4 vs Mk5 GTI Mpg
Post by: Nino on 12 October 2012, 20:28
Hi guys, my cousin is thinking of leaving his mk5 gt tdi for a gti because personally he doesnt think he gets that many miles per tank. A quick search suggests that mixed driving returns around 300 miles per tank for both the mk4 and mk5 gti. My mk4 1.8t returns around 300 miles from full to the light.

On paper, the specs for mpg on both cars are nearly identical, but has anybody actually gone from a mk4 to a mk5? Any real life comparison experiences? He would prefer the mk5 but is worried that the 2litre lump will be a bit harsh on fuel and is impressed with my 300 miles per tank in my mk4.

If the specs for mpg are so similar, is this due to more efficient technology in the mk5?

cheers for any info guys.

What is he getting from the TDI??

If its low then it suggests a fault.

MK5 GTI wipes the floor with the MK4.  Only area where the MK4 wins is interior quality. The MK5 does not feel like the quality product it should be

197bhp vs 150bhp in a better chassis with a much more useable engine which, when tuned, is simply better again

We are currently testing his mileage per tank atm, hes currently on jst over half a tank and has around 240 miles I think.
when I say similar on papar we mean the MPG see below..

I think the main question hes asking is because i get around 300-330 miles a tank would he see this kind of mileage with a mk5 or does it not get anywhere near that due to it being a 2 litre lump?

240 miles to half a tank is about right if he is mainly doing urban with a bit of motorway driving

300-350 in a MK5 should easily be achievable. A mate of mine who owned one which I mapped could easily do Liverpool and back to Merthyr on a tank which included a bit of play time

The engine in the MK5 is a newer engine than the 1.8T and is much more efficient.  It still suffers from coilpack and DV failures like the MK4 but the coilpacks are covered under the recall and the latest revision DV is more than up to the task should he get the car mapped with the added bonus of being half the price of the Forge item

How many miles do you normally get per tank adam?

The Mk5 GTI has a 12 gallon tank (55 litres), therefore 32mpg would give 384 miles to the tank.

I usually see about 24-28mpg as most of my trips are short urban and I like to have some fun. On longer trips I usually see early 30's.

So my average from a tank would be 288-336 miles.

Dependant on driving conditions but from the 1k miles I have done so far in it. 350 seems to be the rough figure I have when filled up.

That's M27 driving and southampton driving in rush hour with some casual "opps hit boost" moments.

Thats Very very good, I didnt realise how good the mileage would be considdering its a 2 ltr lump, the best I have ever seen from my mk4 T is 338 till the light, bt I mostly do town driving tbh and don't get much opertunity to boost lol.

Again thanks alot for the help/info chaps, yet again helpful as always on this site :)

I'll pass this info on and im sure in the coming months a lovely mk5 GTI will be in his garage.

I tend to disagree as it depends on the box. I have recently had a change of heart and after selling my perfectly good mk5 manual Gti I now have an ED30 DSG. The ED30 so far is averaging 260-280 although very little motorway journeys, mainly urban. The manual GTI got me between 280-320 on the same runs. All dependent on the right foot.  In the manual running at 60mph on a motorway is the only way to get over 40mpg. I have once managed a full lap of the M60 getting my youngest to sleep at 55mph N got a massive 48mpg!!

The ED30 is nowhere near as good on the motorway but then again I didn't buy it for those reasons and the DSG is so much better at changing !!

Spot on. On a motorway trip recently driving at constant 70-75mph, I averaged 34mpg just over and returned about 415 miles from the tank.

Round the twisties I usually average about 22-3mpg and get about 260 miles a tank.
