Title: vehicle recommendations please...
Post by: Guy on 10 October 2012, 22:13
hey ho..

a friend of mine is looking to purchase a new car/4x4/van with the following requirements...

preferably 4x4 as they live in deepest darkest devon and the roads get pretty sketchy in winter and they have to get about
ideally a day van with kitchen/converted preferred so they can go surfing happily with the kids
preferably diesel
budget £10k or less (i stress less - it doesn't have to be £10k... happily consider £7.5k etc)

they were looking at defenders etc but are now taken with the idea of a day van

sensible suggestions only please :)

many thanks for your help in advance

A friend of mine converted a Merc Vito to do exactly the same as your friend(s) want, for exactly the same reason. I dunno if there is a 4x4 version though. Its not too big so is easy to live with, and still offers tons of space for boards etc. He got it to keep his surf boards in, as he didn't have room in the house, and doesn't have a garage. Worth a look maybe.......

T5 4Motion with a pre-cut interior purchased off the shelf.

Do they need five seats, or only two?  If they just buy a simple van and put the interior in later it'll  be a lot cheaper than buying a camper and they'll increase the value of the van significantly as it's camperised.

Or if money's tighter have a rummage in the T4 Syncros.  Do they have to sit on the right side?  Can widen the choice a lot more!

Thank you Thomas... can you get the T5 4Mo's in budget without starship mileage?

A handsome t5 (you may need to bosh a window in it)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-TRANSPORTER-T5-2005-4-MOTION-174BHP-WHITE-TOP-SPEC-NO-VAT-/110960823678?_trksid=p5197.m1998&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D18%26meid%3D2662533127484986952%26pid%3D100017%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D2%26sd%3D120996435723%26

And a vehicle more suited to the job (child friendly)

Depends on the definition of starship mileage.  These are commercial vehicles.  Most of them are driven for work!

Word of advice re the Mercedes Vito; don't get a 2wd version if you have to go anywhere remotely damp. They get stuck very easily - we have a few Hi-roof ones at work. They are fine usually, but if you get even remotely near wet grass you'll stay there!
