Title: 97 8v GTI gear selection problem
Post by: thomson07 on 10 October 2012, 16:46
Hi All.

Im having real trouble selecting 1st and reverse gear. The previous owner fitted a new clutch so im hoping its just the cable that needs replaced ?

Anyhoo, any very rough ideas as to how much a independent might charge to replace the cable ?
I simply dont have the time to do it myself.

check the linkage is tight and then fiddle around with the adjuster on the gear lever. worked for me but i also refreshed the linkage and found it had been poorly fitted at some point in the cars history.

the tool probably makes it easier but i wouldnt say essential as its a fairly simple mechanism that you can sort out with trial and error adjusting till everything works as it should
