Title: mk1 golf engine timing marks
Post by: agvonline on 12 July 2005, 08:37
hi all

i have a 1981 1.6 GTi engine (code EG). Does anybody know where the timing marks for the camshaft are on this engine. The Haynes manual says use the front lip of the valve cover (roughly 3 o'clock), but matching the dot on the cam sprocket with that is physically impossible when pistons TDC. At the moment I have the the dot on the cam sprocket lined up with what appears to be a machine mark on the cylinder block (at about 7 o'clock) and this looks right. Any ideas though?

cheers

andy

Hi agvonline
There is a plug in the top of the gearbox bell housing with a pointer for TDC, the cam sprocket has a mark on the inside, lines up with the front flat gasket face of the cam cover. Best way to set the distributer up is to remove the cap and line up the mark on the rotor arm with the notch in the dist body (look for a single notch on the face of the dist where the cap clips on).
