Title: 1.4 golf idle problem

Why do all the golfs Ive owned have a problem with idle? :rolleyes:
 Ok mk3 1.4 abd single point injection. Had this issue with idle since I bought it and need to get it sorted as its starting to get annoying. Driving along and take you foot off the pedal to change gear and the idle will sit high for a few seconds then come down. Sometimes it raises slightly before coming down. Doesnt seem to make a great deal of difference whether its hot or cold. Found the injection unit rubber was split all round so changed that thinking it would be the problem but it wasnt. Had a close look at it yesterday and sprayed the area with carb cleaner to see if there was any air leaks but nothing. What I did notice is that when the revs comes down to idle the throttle stop (which I presume is controlled by ecu) actually moved slightly causing the revs to go up then go back to idle.  Any ideas whats causing this problem? I take it that the ecu is getting a false reading from a sensor somewhere? any ideas please?

Throttle body clean? I got a 1.4 was lovely after that :-)

I've got the same situation with my 1.8, the revs will sit at 1400RPM when I put the clutch in, only when I stop it drops to 1000RPM on Idle, even the idle is high for some reason and I cleaned my TB and breathers, all vacuum lines are connected, out of ideas other than possibly bad dizzy position?

I dont think its the throttle body as I went to clean it yesterday and its as clean as a whistle. Its a bit annoying when you go to change gear and have to pause for a few seconds to let the revs die down.

Sorted it, the Water Temperature Sensor, even if it's displaying the water temp, it still gives issues.
To see if it's causing the problem unplug the sensor and see where the car idles, take it for a quick drive and see if the revs are sticking still.
If they don't stick then it's a simple replacement of that sensor and the problem is solved.  :wink:

 Are you saying you sorted the problem out today with a new temp sender dc?
 I had similar probs with mk4 and bought a temp sender from gsf/euro and it didnt sort the problem but threw the dash readings out,, always read too cool so swaped it back again.

Perhaps they supplied you with the wrong model sensor for your car.
I had the exact same symptoms as you described, by disconnecting the sensor it normalized the revs and they no longer stick before I stop the car.
By replacing it, it's reading the temperatures and the revs don't stick.

Not SPI, it's fuel injected.

Well I know my friend had the same motor and his idled at around 800-900, and now mine idles at that point too.

My 1.8 idles at 900 which I thought was a little high was thinking more 750-800 ?

Well I know a 2liter should idle at 800-880 RPM, and the 2.8 VR6 idles at 650-750 RPM.
