Title: Codes from yesterday
Post by: Dalo Harkin on 07 October 2012, 17:08
Hi all,

I was out for a drive yesterday, nothing out of the ordinary and after about 2 hours had some very slight hesitation when setting off, then as soon as I got home it did it again but worse and the CEL light came on.
Scanned and got the code 17746 camshaft position sensor G40 open or short. now the question is, is it the one under the timing cover next to the block where it states the enine number ARZ etc and am I better getting one from VW or can an ebay job do?

on a seperate note a code I have parts to fix came up that reminded me needing doing lambda sensor B1 S1 is this the one nearest the engine side of the cat or the rear of the car

Cheers

yes that's the right sensor, best to stick with genuine for parts like that. B1 S1 lambda is the front one

Called VW today and they said there are 2 part numbers listed for this....................
Good old VW, now I have to take the old one off to get a part number

Update and could do with some help.....
replacement part showed up, fitted it and car is exactly the same, it wasnt a new part but would I need to clear the code before the car 'should' be ok if that makes sense or should it recognise itself its fixed?

anyway to clear the code other than a different reader, I can only read codes not remove them

anyone?

Would I need to clear the code before or should it go itself once the issue is fixed?

Spoke to someone at VW and gave them the codes and they said the G40 code relates to the hall sensor, which after looking is near the oil filter - can anyone confirm?
 :undecided:

it is also known as a hall sensor but its definitely the camshaft position sensor, just order the part number i gave you.. they're struggling because there isn't one listed for ARZ engines you have to dig a little deeper in to etka

pretty sure you don't need to wipe the code, it will just go intermittent and be stored in the ecu. either the used part is buggered or you have a wiring issue

They reckon I need this:-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=06A+906+433L&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Its a PITA trying to diagnose, it starts fine, a little rough only when you rev it and then it pops and splutters and the ECL light comes on, sounds like its struggling to keep running

thought I would add this incase anyone else gets the same issue:-
unplugged all the connectors including throttle body, inlet mani sensor, and camshaft sensor checked wiring all ok, so decided  to clean the throttle body while I was there, relaced all the sensor wires and car has been fine
will check for codes again today and see whats disappeared
