Hi all new to the mk3 side of things always had mk2's however got a super deal on this so could not refuse and i must say im over the moon with it.However i only have one key that fits the ignition are the keys on a 1992 mk3 coded thanks

I dont think the early mk3's have coded keys
-
I think only after 1994 cars have coded keys.

evening mk2man1,
I might be able to answer this one.... but might not be conclusive
I have recently purchased a Mk3 Gti8v.... The car came with one key.... and it looked like the spare key at that.
This key did not open the doors, but operated the ignition. It also came with an immobiliser fob, so i suspect the Fob has been used all it's life for the doors... and the key in the ignition.
So i think the door locks are mint (and need a good key) and the ignition and key have worn down together over time.
As I have the spare key I to thought it might not have a transponder....
I was lucky enough to get the original Owners Manual with mine.... in the back the Dealer or original owner placed a sticker "To obtain a copy of your key mention the relevant number"
Called my local dealership.... V5, Driving Licence, Util bill -------> £25
...with the risk than if the car as been broken into it might not fit any of the barrels on the car.
A gamble I wanted to take.
One week later I have a VW Branded key with light!!!
It does have a tag on it "MIT TRANSPORTER", yep you know German "WITH".
the Parts guy said I will have to book a session to code the key.... I have not tried the new key yet as the car is about 50miles away..... I will let you know how much once I have tried the key turning the locks
Hope this helps.

Have you got my car? you have just described my exact situation i am going to check the manual right now too.
-
Just going through the mountain of paperwork i got with the car and come across a white sticker with chassis number engine code etc is that number on there do you think
-
pre april 94 don't have chipped keys
-
Nice one i will get one cut tomorrow thanks for your help guys
-
split the key and see if you see a chip in there
-
Errm dunno about the paperwork you have found, the Parts dept only really wanted the chassis number and proof of ownership. He warned me plenty of times if it has been changed at any point in its life it would be £25 note down as they won't do a refund!!
Fair enough i thought.
It does look very much like my ***worn*** key ;-)
My car is 1997, forgot to mention that in my excitement of my first helpful post :-P

AND !!!!
None of the numbers on the packet recived with the new key seem to related to the code in the manual/or the car... But it is in German!
