im really tempted to get an mk5 gti, things that are bothering me are this coilpack recall thing. if it hasnt been done can i take it to vw and get it done not being the original owner?. and also dsg or not 2 dsg. love the idea of dsg sounds fun, makes me faster. downside is this servicing thing, how much am i likely to spend on a dsg service. and if it goes wrong how much should i have put away for it? never driven an automatic before dont really know if i'll get on with it, but the idea is very appealing. also how often is the cambelt supposed to be changed?
ive heard of the things to look out for when buying (thank you other forum thread! :smiley: )like the jumpy sort of gear change especially reverse on dsg. and white worm on badges and wheels, check door seals. anything else u guys can think of? might go look at one tomorrow looks quite good. 80k(miles not money lol) for just under £7000 2005 leather seats, dsg (with paddles), parking sensors, and i think it said the cd changer ..if it hasnt had a recent dsg service should i avoid or just haggle the seller down the cost of the service? or if they have completely avoided the dsg service in its whole history just walk away yeh?

Not being the original owner doesn't matter on the coilpack recall. Just ask the dealer to check the VIN against the recall to see if the car needs them.
Only you can decide on DSG, you need to drive one and go from there. According to VW's servicing prices on their website a DSG service is £179 and needs doing every 40k miles so that car is due a second service. Cambelt is 4yrs or 60k miles I think whichever is sooner. Theres a lot of discussion on this!
Something else to check is the aircon. If the compressor is not working it's quite expensive to replace

thats really not as bad as i was expecting i have no idea why but i was thinking about £300 for a dsg service.

I own both a Manual GTI & 300bhp edition 30 with DSG. They're both great cars. Don't let the cost of servicing etc put u off.
The DSG is a great gearbox and can be so good for relaxed drives or ideal for flat out drives. It's very responsive too and the paddles add to the fun factor. Hope it Go's well for u either way

Was in that position a few times when I was looking for mine. Don't worry. As my mum said the right one for you will come along soon enough. I did end up with a better one than the ones I missed so it all worked out in the end.
I went for DSG and love the option of being a Sunday driver when I feel like relaxing and then flicking in to manual mode and giving it the beans when I want to have some fun :afro:
