Title: shaving 10mil from the hub face of my alloy
Post by: robjackson on 03 October 2012, 20:15
Guys guys guys
Can i safely shave 5 or 10mils out of the back of my alloy wheels where the hub face meets the cars hub face?
Or is that not advisable?

if you do then you will need to run spacers on the wheels or put the chamfer back on the centre hole, the reason the chamfer is there in the first place is to make the rim sit snug against the hub, my old mk2 rims had the inner face shaved down and when it was done i was told if i run without spacers it will cause the wheel do not be 100% flush on the hub and can stress the bolts so much they snap, i have 2 kids which come in the car with me most of the time and i didn't want to risk it, each to their own though

10mm would be too much to shave of and will weaken the wheel. id say you could really only go about 5mm tops of the bolt face and even that would be pushing it

if plenty of metal between bolt seat and new face it'll be fine,  how do you think the same wheel is avalible in diffrent offsets.

just need a reasonable size late with gap bed  plenty of them about,  and just re machene the chamfer on the wheel  no problem

I agree that a good machine shop will be able to skim the wheel and put the chamfer back on but i'd like to think that the offsets found on wheels are acheived by the wheels being offset by whatever is holding the rim to the centre hub....

correct. The hub is the same depth no matter what offset. Hence shaving the hub face can weaken the rim if you take too much off. A good machine shop will tell if its safe or not

if it was a simple as made out do you not think itd be more common practise seeing as itll only cost around 80 tops to get 4 wheels skimmed

Good comments guys. , ther'll be some right royal messing around to get 8" rims with a 15mil offset onto my golf, such as arch rolling, tyre stretching and possibly 5mil off the wheels.
Gratefull for the input guys,
Cheers

i can hire an arch roller for £25 a day and have a heat gun and some advice for how to do it but the downside is you would have to do it on my drive as i can't let it out of my sight, i'm just up the motorway a touch past botany bay, PM me if you wanna have a do at it

Miggs2002, thats a top offer, your a gent. But iv got a jedi-master guy doing the redrilling and fitting of the hubs/discs +drums, and match up the coilies and cossie wheels to stretched arches that tuck the tyres and poke the rims!!
All in the bag.
Many many thanks bro,
And if you think i might be able to help with anything then just shout up.

no worries pal, i'm still an oldskool kind of dubber, back in the day dubbing was all about helping others as best as possible cos your into the same stuff and in the same frame of mind, it's amazing how far away from that scenario is nowadays with all the forums, it's still helpful on some of the forums but not many people offer their services or experience in person for free, i believe in karma and one of these days it will pay off big lol, cheers for the offer, i'll keep you in mind

True words mate.
If you find it a buzz, or even exiting, or even just a. Bit of fun, up the pathg, with a couple of lads, brews on the go, maybe a beer. Peaople in+ out the house, mucking in, getting low dubs to look cooler, and funkier, faster, or stop better.
THIS, is 'Dubbing.
Im onto it mate, same as you.
Maybe get the tunes rocking in the house, and nipping in +out to the hardwear shop, or the carparts suppliers, takeaway or caf'. And then thees the emergency phonecalls, and emails to hav rare or hard to find parts waiting or u to collect, or even delivered.
Mint mate. I love it all

I'll let you know a bout the next one,
My mate Barnsey says,
"Just bring the wagon round, we'll do your coilovers tgether, and i'll show you how to do it the easy way,
You just keep the brews coming"
Thats Dubbing my friend, and like you, im in it for the long term, to hav a buzz,
Oldskool style.
Nice1

i know of Jez and have seen his car at a few meets and stuff but never spoke to him or even know what e looks like, me and Barnesy are on dub marines forum, have been for years, he was on an old forum i used to run called dub monkeys, i think he'd just bought the jetta back then, that B3 of John's is a stunningly clean car just not a fan of gold cars, has he put the steffans on that he had on the jetta? Jez's car is just pure sex, looks awesome without the roof rails and the family history for it is fantastic, last i saw it was up for sale i was looking for a new car at the time it went up but didn't have enough for it
