Title: RCD 310 MDI Compatibility
Post by: floss on 02 October 2012, 21:47
Hi All, I've recently just found your forum !

I've just upgraded my 59 plate 1.4 GT 160 to a 62 plate GTD DSG, and am loving it but...

In the old car I was able to connect my generic MP3 player (samsung) to the stereo, but in the GTD I get a 'device not compatible' message.  On checking the manual and the MP3 player it is USB 2.0 compatible.

Anyone got any other ideas, or shall I just resign myself to getting a new state of the art MP3 player

(The dealer have already sent me a new cable, so I don't think it is that ?)

Thanks in advance for any help !

In theory it should work the same.

the only difference I can tell is the GT had a blue background to the stereo, but the GTD is a black background..not sure if the model number had an upgrade sometime in the last 3 years ?

I suppose I need to find a friend that has an MP3 player that the new car will recognise and go from there.  My brothers iphone works via the MDI (with the iphone connector, not USB connector) but I assumed that was an apple v anyone else type thing.

Load some music onto a memory stick and try that using the USB lead. You could have a faulty USB lead, but if it does work, you'll see that you don't need a MP3 type player at all, as the radio does most things that an ipod does anyway.

The earlier mk6s had the blue backlit screen and the later cars have the black screen to bring it up to date with the screen between the dials. There may well be firmware differences between the models.
How South West are you? I'm in Devon if you want to try your MP3 in my car, or my phone in your car to see if there is a fault with your unit. I also have VCDS if you want to check the coding is set up properly from the factory.

Welcome to the forum.

I only use the USB lead and a flash drive in the armrest, they are cheap enough. I believe iPods and MP3 players use the aux socket on front of the armrest so you'll need another lead. I don't know if they are all compatible.

You should have 2 leads for the "Media in" socket Keith. One with a USB end and the other for an ipod/phone. Using either of these, you can control everything from the headunit or steering wheel. The aux socket is for other types of MP3 players, but only transmits the sound to the radio, meaning you have to control it from the device itself.

Well mine only came with the one in the armrest for USB attachment, is the other one supplied by default?

There should be one on the outside of the armrest as well that just takes a jack plug.

Yes there is a round socket on the front of the armrest but I don't have a cable that fits it.

No, you should get to MDI cables one for USB and one for Apple iDevices.

Its just a simple jack to jack socket.

Yes it is. They tend to "go missing" and end up on ebay next to listings for "missing" bottle openers.

thanks for all the advice guys !

I have tried this morning with a USB flash drive which connected, but said it couldn't find any audio files (mind you it was a very old one) and also an old MP3 player that I'd forgotten we still had and that worked !!!

I have been using the plug in the arm rest with the USB connector cable...still can't work out why it doesn't like the original player, but I guess that doesn't really matter now I have got it to work... at least I don't have to put up with just the radio now  - thanks again

How are you loading them on? I make a file on the flash drive for each album, then rip a cd using either windows media player or itunes, then copy the music into the files on the flash drive. They need to be copied as FAT32 files. I have no idea what that means, but using the media player or itunes, it just works.

I just copied and pasted from the c drive to the flash drive using windows explorer (no idea what format !) ... I'm not very techy but I'll give it go !!

Right click the drive in windows explorer and select properties it will tell you its "File System" it needs to be "FAT32" not "NTFS".  If you need to change it copy eveything off it (if thats your only copy).  Then Right Click on the drive letter and select "Format" this time (ensure that the have definetly selected the mp3 player or flash drive set the File system to be "FAT32" click "Start" once its finished copy your music back and this time it should work.  The files need to be mp3 or wma file types/extensions.
