Title: Mk2 Fuel Supply Intermitent Problem
Post by: Padster on 11 July 2005, 12:58
Dear all.

I need help on a Fuel Supply problem. I have an 87 Mk2 Golf GTI with 125,000 on the clock. about a month ago it suddenly just died whilst on the move. It re-started after a few minutes, but since then it dies intermittently when hot, cold, just after starting up, or after a many hours! (there doesn't seem to be a pattern). I had run the tank very low at one time, but the problem did go away a few weeks after this, and then has re appeared recently when the tank has been well topped up for some time!

I've check for a spark, and that seems fine. The relay and fuse are also good. Because of the way it stalls I initially thought that its wasn't the pump, as it never coughs or splutters to a halt, it simply shuts off instantlly. I attached a light bulb to the main fuel pump plug (under the car) and when in next stalled the light also when out straight away. This made me think it must be an electrical problem. A friend from work also swears he had the same fault with his GTI and it turned out to be the Hall Sensor!

At the weekend the problem got worse and it was cutting out every minute or so. When checking the current on the pump it was only reading 4 amps (rather than 6) Could this mean a faulty pump?

I would really appreciate any suggestions as changing the pump may be a difficult job (due to the corroded pipe joints) and I'd prefer to be sure of what is causing the problem first.

Thanks in advance.
