Title: mk3 front wheel offset
Post by: swainy on 01 October 2012, 12:12
I know this is asked loads but Trial fitted one of my new wheels on saturday,
It will be a 17x8 et13 on the back which looks to be ok.
I dont have front adapters yet but the fronts will be 17x8 et33 before adapters, will 15mm be ok or will it poke too much?

Et18 on a 8" will poke a huge amount but with arch work it will fit.

17x8 with offset of ET18. bloody hell good luck with that mate
they are going to look huge on a mk3.
and you are going to have alot of poke up front as tweed has said.
the rears will have a tiny bit of poke if any at all but will sit pretty flush i recon but on 17" wheels 8" wide your car is gona have to be jacked up high mate unless you do alot of arch work and put 35 profile tyres in them and even then i recon you are gona struggle

Bugger. Not what i wanted to hear.
Ive never seen these fitted on a mk3 so this might be why.

I'm 16x8 on front et20 with a 195/40/16 tyre.

I've got it to tuck under but as I said that was a lot of arch work!

You got any pics of your front fitment?
I've got plastic arches so I could cut away the lips and bond them on like some of the mk2 boys do.

just found this pic for you. this car has 16" wheels with ET18 front and ET13 rear. and it has the plastic arches fitted
although that does look like more poke on the front that ET18 would give. i had ET20 on the front of my mk3 and it was pretty flush. that looks more like ET-18

Car above is only 2mm different to mine and I bet that's had arch work.

So you can see that mine has had serious arch work to make them fit.

I rolled the lip then pulled them out. Say pull but its more pushing lol

Stainsey your wheels weren't 8" though. So et20 to yours that where 7.5j would sit further in

That sits about how I want it to.
Looks like ill be getting a arch roller and seeing what I can do.

You will struggle to get yours like that with 17"

100% need a 195/35/17 tyre

i thought the ET was the distance from the hub face to the rim of the wheel?  :undecided:

Yes that's right so... And middle of wheel being 0.
So if you have a 225mm wide wheel with et20 you have 92.5mm from hub to lip.
But if you have a 200mm wide wheel with et20 you have 80mm from hub to lip.

ah i thought it worked like this

if you have a 7j wheel Et20
and an 8j wheel Et20
they would both have the outer rim in the same place but the inner rim would go in an inch further.
if you get what i mean

I understand what you mean but it doesn't work like that.

It might be a f**k about, but could i fit arms and shafts from a lower spec golf as they are narrower to give me a bit more room to play with?
My bottom arm bushes need doing anyway, would there be any other problems?

Ill think they are same size. Also anti roll bar won't fit. Only way to get smaller arms is to cut and weld. So if your going to do that, you may as well just do the arches

Yer, arches will be rolled and pulled.
