Still a little lost on what oil I should be using in my car.  And after receiving various different answers from different sources I am now even more confused!   :undecided:

My cars on the annual service regime and my manual says I should use the 502.00 spec oils.  Now this spec in itself is not very clear because it lists out several different oil grades:  0w-30, 5w-40, 10w-40, 5w-50, 0w-40 & 5w-30.  Now which of these oils should I be using, and is any particular one better than another?

The Stealer I bought my car from says I should be using 10w-40.
Most websites/forums tend to suggest 5w-30 is the way to go.
Halfords says I should be using 5w-30.

Can anyone what oil I should be using and out of the various options which is the best oil to use?  Many thanks

My cars on the annual service regime and my manual says I should use the 504.00 spec oils.  Now this spec in itself is not very clear because it lists out several different oil grades:  0w-30, 5w-40, 10w-40, 5w-50, 0w-40 & 5w-30.  Now which of these oils should I be using, and is any particular one better than another?

Yes 504 spec is correct and ensure that you use the normal not long life stuff and change it every 12 months or 10,000 which ever comes first. My ED30, MK6 and ED35 never used/use enough oil to warrant me buying any between services.

Mine was billed to VW as using
Platinum 5 40
At its last two services at the main dealer

Quote
from the link i posted earlier
non-LongLife Time and Distance servicing for petrol engines is 502.00.  This is usually a fairly high spec 'fully synthetic' oil, SAE 5W40

Longlife oil
504.00 - is the spec for petrol engines, this is the latest VW LongLife "3" specification.  SAE 5W30.

Note about my photo of my oils
The Castrol edge is the longlife oil 5W30
The VW Quantum platinum is the non longlife oil 5W40

Brilliant 5w-40 it is then! Thanks Snoopy. I suppose I should have known really as that's what I use to put in my Mk5 gti! I just thought perhaps it might be different with the mk6. Cheers

My understanding was you were better off using the long life oil in the standard annual service at it offered the engine more protection?

Comments welcomed

To be fair I have also heard this.

Be very interested to see people's responses. Especially as I have a brand new bottle of castrol Edge 5w-30 in my cupboard!

Ive also heard that if your just topping up with a little oil between services it doesn't matter if you use 5w-40 or 5w-30. Is this the case? Cheers
