Post by: myk3 on 11 July 2005, 08:24
im looking to get one of these cars soon, i no that they are 150bhp standard but what engine mods can be done to these to get them pushing 200bhp and also what would an guess on the cost be. also how reliable/unreliable would they be after these mods? and will the engine need to be reinforced to handle the extra stress. sorry for all the Qs but you no how it is when you want a new car ;) cheers

just get it remapped by jabba, amd or revo,  cost around £500 but it should easily push 190-200bhp if its a drive by wire model

what would you guess the BHP of a 1999/2000 1.8T with these mods:

CAI, sports car full system exhaust, revo remap.

is there any thing else that can be done to these engines that give the car a bit more power?

Na, somebody has got to do the remap for you.

I wouldnt' get a revo remap if you plan to carry out other mods such as exhaust and air filter. The revo maps are off the shelf so dont' take into account aftermarket parts you've put on.

A Jabbasport, stealth, etc remap is bespoke to your car so could squeeze a few more bhp over REVO's map.

Some of the 'fairly' cheap, but effective mods are enlarging the turbo's intake pipe to flow 70% more air. looking about £170 for that. Lightened pulley wheels were about £180 and make it rev more freely. Forge (or like) uprated dump valve (£80-100), larger front mounted intercooler (£various), decent air filter (£40-200), decent exhaust (£300+).

With all that lot bolted on and a bespoke map you could be pushing the 240bhp mark without compremising any reliability issues. Obviously when you get more power out of any engine is reduces it's life, but VW engines are known to go past the 300k mile mark so it's nothing to worry about.
