My steering wheel moves around when I apply little pressure to it all round,I tightened the steering wheel nut but it did not have any affect, how am I going to rectify this problem?
-
Sounds like the steering column bearing.
-
+1 to this, mine is the same.
-
I figured it was the steering column bearing,Ho do I get to it do I have to take the whole column out?will I need to take the dashboard out?
-
Dash and windscreen has to come out and you have to lower the tyre pressures to 23 psi
Steering wheel ,cowling, stalks and spline adapter have to come off then you can get at the bearing
Some pics and part numbers here ..

Thanks that tread is very informative, lol @ Tyre pressure ,

Check the shear bolt on the column below the plastic cowling, both of my past mk3's have been loose allowing loads of movement in the column and stalks.

Yes check this first, I have just done mine and the bolt was missing. Fitted a new normal bolt and its rock solid again.

checked it mine still is wobbly though :S
-
Swap it for a normal one then if you can't tighten it properly, it makes loads of difference although to be fair its a shear bolt for a reason and I'm assuming its to allow the steering column to move if involved in an accident rather than been totally solid for the driver to impact.

My understanding of the shearbolt is an anti tamper device against the crims
-
I replaced it with a bolt it looks as if the bolt is less dense, are you sure?
-
Shear bolts are there to secure the ignition lock, it was written into car manufactures rules and guidelines time ago, where steering locks are fitted they must be protected by an anti tamper fixing, which is stupid as itS pi$$ easy to break the lock anyway.

Top column bearing breaking up is very common on mk3's can be easier in the long run to replace the upper column.
Also shear bolts are fitted for a reason.
