Title: Could someone help me with this please?
Post by: Nino on 28 September 2012, 13:05
Hey guys, firstly im sorry im asking this but My misses recently helpped me out with repair costs and now shes asked me to look up a new car for her and i need your advice.

Shes set her mind on ether a Ford feista ST150 or the Ford feista 1.6 TDCI Zectec S (the one designed to look like the ST)

Now her budget is her car 55 plate 1.0 Vauxhall corsa 12v and upto £3000.

Ive been looking and I have discovered that the deisel is around £5-£7k where as the ST are around £3-5k.

My problem is the only ford i ever owned was a 1.6 16v focus so I dont have a clue about these cars.
I found this one that looks within our price bracket but isit too cheap????

What im bascally asking is what (if anyone knows) should I be looking for if we go to view this? and what to check? :)

Thanks for any support you can give guys  :cool:

I have owned both, an '05 ST which I kept for 2 months back in 2005, was heavy on fuel and the performance felt very lack lustre, complete disappointment and my biggest car purchasing mistake :sad:

We then also had an 08 Zetec S TDCi which we bought in 2009 and sold earlier this year, this was a great car.

£35 per year tax, £200 insurance, 50mpg regardless of how you drove it and on a run 60+ was achievable, plus the car just seemed more fun to drive than the ST with a good fun chassis.

100% reliable with only a set if tyres in our ownership beyond the annual services, my wife loved it and I would recommend one as cheap fun motoring :cool:

Ok after looking around for the past week, we came across this and that, looked and feistas, ST's, Clio sports, GOlfs, Polo's
Then we went to look at this.....
http://www.edgecarr.com/used-cars/ford-focus-2-0-tdci-titanium-5dr-cardiff-201240486846252

Now I gotta be fair considdering the mileage its MINT! it has a full service history (so he told me) and its the Mk2.5 all the extras apart from the Sat nav.
it does come with issues thou however I gave the garage abit of a hard time, the windscreen has a crack, theres no MOT, no tax and there is a whining noise coming from the engine bay when you give it some. I personally drove it and the turbo was NOT lumpy, and there wasnt any lag, however I did notice the clutch felt alittle strange, what I mean by this is when you press on the clutch it goes down really fast and i mean foot onit and you foot hits the floor quicker then what felt it should but coming back up it felt alittle stiff.....

Other than these small issues it felt nice to drive and the bodywork is mint.

I managed to get him to agree to...
* Replace the windscreen.
* Sort that whining noise could be EGR?
* Look at the clutch.
* Put a new MOT onit.
* 6 months TAX.
* 1 month warranty.

The mileage is at 102k so I asked him about the belt and he told me it was done at 80k (I havent yet seen the service book but he said he will have it for me to look over and he said he will also ensure the receipts from jennings FORD will be there). I also got him to agree to take my girlfriends car and give us £1500 for it so if all is well with this car it will cost us, her car and £3500.
He has taken £100 deposit and writen us a reciept stating that he will perform the work we have requested, then we can test drive it again to see if we are happy, if we are not he will fully refund our deposit and we lose nothing.

So what do you guys think? by the looks of the paper work I did see, there was a reciept from Jennings ford showing it went in for this noise and they beleave it to be the EGR valve or gasget. and the mileage reads 91k on that reciept.
The car has had one owner that I beleave used this car for bussiness use hence the mileage.

Your comments are always welcome guys shes got her heart set on this car now shes really excited and I really don't want her buying a car thats more hassle than its worth if you get my meaning?

price wise the car is right and is its a titanium model it will have most of the goodies - especially the heated front windscreen and possibly heated leathers?

register with ford owners forum as its one of the best for a focus (see you on there - or your missus  :smug:)

the only thing you may need to check is if it has a DPF as if this buggers up then it can be costly. fuel economy is good, we have a 1.6tdci at work and get a good 50mpg+ even when driven hard.

Salsh, How do I check if its a DPF? what ever that means and when looking at the paperwork is said something along the lines of "Inspected, and suspected EGR gasget" "Customer does not want work done" "Fault check and delete £84"

Barry, yea she tends to do around 15-30 miles per day so dont want something that will kill her on fuel :)

as its a 2.0 i think it does has a dpf but as she does decent mileage it wont be an issue as you need to give it a good thrashing regulalrly if its only used around town but if used on the motorway then it will be fine.

theres more info to be had from the link mate as to what features the car should have.

a bit more info found on another forum where someone asked a similar question:

the main issue regarding the 1.6tdci is the DPF. when you reach 37.5k miles then you need to refill the additive and get the computer reset (which can be pricey). at around 75k miles you then need the additive refilled and DPF replaced/cleaned and computer reset. which again costs money.

if you can get your hands on a 1.8tdci then you dont have the above. the 2.0tdci (pre 07) also doesnt have the DPF (sometimes)

the main issue is now, due to current regulations regarding emissions. then the DPF is found in most modern diesels.

in essence you might want to do a bit of research on the Diesel Particulate Filter and how to look after them etc etc before buying a car and developing issues later due to not looking after it. after all DPF and additive are very ££££!!!
