Hey everyone!
Last friday my mk4 AUM started sounding horrendous, like a tank....with a blown exhaust! Got it into work where we had a look at it on the ramp and it appeared to be the flexi part of the pipe with the cat on  decided to go with a miltek de-cat as i already have a cat back system.
Fast forward to today and we fit the de-cat.... it still sounds horrendous!!! do the manifolds crack / leak? or could it be the turbo?

manifolds can crack, i'm currently spying one on ebay, stainless steel for about £80, but i want it as its shiny

whats more common to go? manifold or turbo?
-
depends i rekon, has the turbo been under strain? i.e tow bar fitted? last owner part of the caravan club? i havent heard of many manifolds going but it could be a possibility if it some how cracked due to shock from a bump or hitting something that inadvertently shunted parts attached to it? :undecided: and also check the seals

stainless ones produce more heat and WILL crack thats why there so cheep

turbo housings do tent to crack alot, also it could be the triangular gasket in between the manifold and turbo

feel where its blowing from??
itll be hot mind

well just got back from work where we got the car on the ramp again, stuck our heads under the bonnet and could see that the bolts from the manifold into the turbo were worryingly loose! Has anyone ever experienced this?
We managed to tighten the bolts up and when started up it was a bit better....hoping that its just the gasket we will need to replace!

yeah ive had it, like i said above the triangular gasket, make sure you get the gasket from vw because aftermarket ones never seem to get the stud pattern correct and then u have to hack away at the gasket to make it fit which in return weekens the gasket and it wont last long, also change the three bolts as the like to snap
-
it tourned out to be the gasket as you said
i am a very very relieved man!
-
good, glad to hear you have it sorted bud
-
was absolutely bricking it, thought it was gonna be the turbo! I'll take a £3.24 gasket any day lol!

Unfortunately another issue has reared its ugly head!
The exhaust strted blowing again on thursday, had a look at it today and its the same bolts have come loose again. Its the bolts from the exhaust manifold down into the turbo.
Does anyone know why they are coming loose?
I may be completely wrong (it happens a lot) but could it be engine mount related at all? My thinking behind that shout is that if there is too much movement from a mount they may come loose?
