I'm doing a disc/pad/bearing change this weekend so is there a safe way to wind the pistons in without the tool or is it a 'must use' ?.
-
You can use a big set of grips mate and push it back normally works fine
-
i wouldnt say its the best idea but i left my rewind tool at home and used a scraper to push the pistons back in

You have to wind the calipers at the same time as pushing them in.
-
Some people wind the rears in with circlip pliers but I've always used a proper wind back tool, do not simply force them back or you'll ruin them. Only the fronts can be prised straight back.
-
You can get the wind in tool from Halfords and its not expensive.
-
I think it's about £30 which is a lot for something I won't use very much but if its the only way then I'll have to get one .
-
I bought a wind tool that can fit most cars. Cost about £50 but ill have for rest of my life and charge people £5 to borrow it. Over a life time I'm sure ill get my money back
-
I purchased the windback tool from vwspares/AVS, Only about £14.00 + vat.
I found it impossible to wind and push back effectively with circlip pliars, infact i think there was blood too lol .. but that's just me.
When you have the right tool you realise what you were fighting against without it!

Think I got one for a tenner from SCMF before on trade......
Got a Bluepoint kit now tho.
-
I'll get one tommorow..
-
G clamp & a big spanner to rewind it
-
I tried that as I have several big G clamps - it dont work!

Spoke to a technician at a VW dealer today and he said you must use the proper tool or you risk destroying the caliper...tool purchased from mill auto for £23..:afro:
-
Like I said.
-
Top man. I can't see the point in potentially wrecking a calliper for the sake of twenty quid which you can use in the future. :afro:
-
Best £23 i ever spent, there is no way in hell you could wind those pistons back safely without using the tool.
