Title: Relay shaft ball
Post by: jack.pe on 25 September 2012, 15:57
Just changed mine but with an aftermarket from ebay. Although much reduced still has some play. Does anyone know how to eliminate this? are there any aftermarket improvements/ upgrades?

I fitted a genuine one, because the copies looked naff! accuracy is everything with parts like these...
have you fitted the rest of the bushes, and linkages etc, as this makes all the difference...

Also try using the "Search" option, subject has been coverd many times

Plus where the arm meets the shaft usually wears and gets sloppy.

The bush on the shift rod always gets overlooked as its a take everything off job to change!

Bought one from GSF for the job I did this weekend. Ended up having to file it down so it would fit into the slot in the lever that is attached to it. Wish I had checked at a VW dealer but the price and leadtime for the item listed by VW Heritage made me risk it: http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Gear-Relay-Shaft-with-Ball-MK2-Golf-Jetta-191711173B_act_shop.product_pID_16381354_lang_EN_country_GB.htm (http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Gear-Relay-Shaft-with-Ball-MK2-Golf-Jetta-191711173B_act_shop.product_pID_16381354_lang_EN_country_GB.htm). Gearshift is lot better - hopefully it will stay that way for a little while.
