Bit of a strange one this. My car was parked at my moms house today while I was visiting her,the kind man next door reversed his car off his his drive and managed to hit my rear bumper! My mom was putting the rubbish out at the time this happened and saw the neighbour hit my car. Before she had time to stop him he drove off! So without saying she came to tell me straight away,as you can guess I was not best pleased.
After inspecting the damage I decide to wait for the neighbour to return. Once he arrived home I pleasantly told him what happened and showed him the damage to my car,to my surprise he denied it was him! After a heated chat I said well let's look to see if we can see any damage to his car to prove it was him. It was clear to see the damage on his car,you could tell it was fresh as the marks were clean and not dirty like the rest of his car. To my horror he then told me he was going to do nothing as I could not prove it was him..he then told me if my mothers word against his. By this point I was starting to get slighty irate, more so because it's him in the wrong and all I want is to get my car fixed. Anyway after a few more heated words exchanged he told me to piss off and prove its him,if not then I can stick my car where the sun don't shine!
The thing that's more annoying is the guys well in to his 60's and know me since I was born. It not like I'm a stranger on the street out to scam him. With out sounding stuck up my mom lives in a nice area in a small cul-de-sac that's quiet a wealthy area, the neighbour not short of a few quid same as us really, so it's not like I'm a scum bag trying to make a quick quid off him.
To be honest he really shocked me,we have always been friendly with each other and known each other for years,he's know my mother for 35+ years! I even helped him build his drive a few years ago.
So basically what would you guys suggest I do next? I'm going to talk again tomorrow with him but I'm almost certain it's going to fall on deaf ears.
Cheers in advance lads.
Ps the damage is not that bad maybe a £200 repair but why should I foot the bill for someone else's mistake!
-
leave it to your insurance company or just strangle the old c**t
-
take pictures of the damage to your car and his car while its still fresh and send them to your insurance company, they will deal with it and he can deny all he wants to but the insurance company should send someone out to inspect it which will the give you the needed proof it was him
-
inform your insurance company, they will then contact his if you have a number plate and they'll slog it out, i know for a fact most insurance companies employ private forensic laps and if there is paint transfer from your vehicle to his and his to yours then thats a sound clause as you also have a eye witness report. do not move your vehicle and take photo evidence of the damage as it may be required in small claims court or by the other insurer.
in my opinion this is why drivers over the age of 50 should be tested every 2 yrs as some are not safe on the roads at all i.e. the latest news of the 80 yr old doing 5MPH joining a dual carriage. im not say the bloke was right, far from it and if i had seen it i would of put him on the deck but at the same time, joing a dual road at 5MPH will cause accidents, time and money as elderly drivers are marked as 1in5 to cause obstructions on the road, bit of information from my previous insurance job :lipsrsealed:
-
Dig up his drive when he is out then say prove it LOOL! :lipsrsealed:
My fav is dressing up in a grim reaper costume with scythe and hover over his car whilst point a boney finger at the damage whilst shaking your head!

I'm with Battered Barry on this one. Smash both his wing mirrors off, spray expanding foam up his exhaust and spray paint 'liar' on his car and just pay for the repair your self.

why didn't you phone the police?!!!!
he caused an accident and left the scene.

True Len but my old man had an agreement with a party that bumped my old man then two days later he had a letter from old bill about leaving a scene. TBH the Orion was FKD compared to the tank Volvo!
Point is it might rattle his cage to do something and sort it, before it escalates to grim reaper
Police informing is not so bad idea as its neigbourly love these days :lipsrsealed:

Never. Old people are the most arrogant on the roads, closely followed by 17-23 year old boys. I bet he did on purpose, because he's fed up of listening to your dubstep till 3 am
-

This. I'd call the insurance first, pass on his car details and then call the police (on the non emergency number ofcourse - 101) and tell them what happened, that he is refusing to accept responsibility, that you have a witness and that you've notified your insurer. That will be enough to teach the old man some manners and a dose of f**k you.
-
Good news lads the guy has given me his details and said sorry for his actions. :)

That's good news bro!

Part of me feels like telling him to stick it,but that would just be stupid on my behalf.
-
I would. He was rude, arrogant and insulting. I'd still inform police and insurer.

Ask yourself this, 'do I really need this battle'.

Agreed. If he's going to pay, just get it over with.
-
if he's paying up i'd leave it at that. Not worth the grief and you'll still have to park there in the future.

Your Mum saw it, therefore she is a witness. Go to the Police station, and they will take all the information off you. How do I know? It happened to me on Friday!
I borrowed a mates Civic Type R, drove into Fareham to get my hair cut, and left the car in the town centre car park. Came back to a nice little note on the windscreen, saying "woman driver in White Golf  Reg Number ................... hit your car and left.
Front bumper/splitter and wing has paintwork damage. My mate was relatively understanding about it, considering! so we went to the local police station, which incidentally backs onto the car park!
They gave us a form to fill in, and as its hit a hit and run incident, they will follow it up. They said though, that as the witness never left their details, its unlikely (unless the guilty party admits it) that their insurance will pay out. There are cameras in the car park, but they are on 24 hour loop, and unlikely to be viewed before the form would be processed!!!
Good luck, and hope you see the old prick off for as much as you can!

If the car park is covered by cameras you should have had a word with security to see if you could use the mobile to record the CCTV playback. Depends on how nice you are when you ask them. Happened years back on a complex near me and they let me view despite there being a form for a full copy. As it was it was a scally tw4t who hood up keyed the side. Jealousy. And Nowt I could do but at least I knew before paying for a copy of the footage.
And old buggers don't always know they hit you either. Other half had this happen although thankfully no damage whilst waiting for me to come out of the chippy with our Friday night fish n chips. He looked dazed and shocked apparently and was shaking as he didn't realise he reversed into her.
Glad all sorted for the OP :afro:
