Lovely!  Must be very quick.....306 GTI-6 best handling car in its class, a tad better than the 205 GTI. I have owned so many Pug GTI's, amazing but build quality lets them down.

Ah Len.....Indeed if my memory serves me correctly you have a 405 Mi-16.....Amazed the engine is not in a 205 by now as that is where most of the Mi engines are these days!

want to have a play in a mi16 205 at some point.

as for the 1.9 / 1.6 205 thing   ether the 1.9's arn't all that or the few i've driven have been work out as they din't seem much quicker if at all    when compared to the 1.6's  and they were more revvy and eager to be driven

1.9 is harder to get the power down and has a bit more torque steer, both are great cars to drive.
Id even go as far as saying the 205 is possibly better hot hatch than a MK2 as a drivers car, the golf wins hands down on build and reliability :undecided:
Sticking carbs on sounds good, but why make it more unreliable and thirstier on fuel just to sound good....

my mi was a bastard to get the power down and a b!tch to keep running on song with the carbs had to be taken to rolling road to be set up every 3 months as weather changed, shee alwasy made just shy of 160@ the wheels she was tottaly striped out though. but prefer golfs as pug build quality was awefull and the lift off oversteer you suffer from the rear beams was just stupid

Years ago at work a lad had an MI16 conversion.  looked quick, I'd never been in it though.  The 1.6/1.9 thing was the same with mk1 G's.  1.8's had more bottom end grunt and the 1.6's were happier up the top end, depends what you prefer.  Tuned 1.8's get a bit of both so would imagine the same would be for the pug.
