Now then, got a 91 8v gti
Having a little problem with the golf. Every now and again when i use my wipers, there is a small puff of smoke and the fuse blows. Car has had service today and engineer said it was probably the relay on the way out, does anyone know which relay number it is so i can get it swapped out.
Cheers

72 or 74 i think on my 16v? it's the top left one (not that they are all full of course).
Just pop each one out and try the relay, if nothing happens that's your relay :)

It will have '19' or '99' printed on it. If you visit your local scrappy try to find one with '99' on it as these are the cool variable intermittant relays, once you get one you'll wonder how you coped without it
Look for em in newer/luxury dubs, i.e. MK3 Golfs & Passats.

thanks guys, i checked it out and it was the 19 which is a duffer. was making some really weird crackling noises so hopefully a replacement will sort all of that out. Will give the scrappy a call.
Thanks again

How does that work then? How do you controll the intermittent speeds?

you flick the stalk down to intermittant & allow the wipers to do 1 sweep, then click the stalk back up to 'off'. Then wait for the desired time and flick it back to intermittant :)

Oooooooooooooo gotta get me one of those!

oh well, tried replacing with a new 19 relay and the problem is still happening. I'm thinking it must be the wiper stalk itself which is faulty as it seems to happen as i switch between different settings. unless anyone has any better ideas?
Cheers

Get the ignition column shroud and dash under tray off for a start and have a good look at all the plugs/wires for damage.
Sounds like a good excuse to upgrade to MK3 Golf wiper stalks though, straight swap apart from you swap the hazard button from the old stalks to the MK3 ones. Looks good too
