Title: Stupid Water Pump/Timing Belt Cover Bolt question
Post by: bod55 on 08 July 2005, 11:58
Apologies if this is a bit of a stupid question.  I have just come to replace the water pump on my 1989 Digifant.  Everything came apart nice and easliy apart from the bolt fixing the timing belt cover onto the water pump which is well and truly siezed.  The only way I can think of removing it is to cut it off, but need to find a replacement first.

Can anyone tell me what size / type of bolt I need cos it doesn't look like a standard bolt.

Cheers..

soak it with some penetrating fluid and leave it for a few mins. I wack a slightly smaller sized socket over rusted bolts to undo them. I even heat them if they are that bad

sorry dont know the size of bolt. order one today from VW?

It's a 6mm  If you can't get one from VW off the shelf you can use an ordinary 6mm bolt of the same length and then cut/grind down one side of the head to enable it to fit the pump housing
A bit of a bodge but it has often been a usefull way of getting oneself out of the cr@p until you can get the correct bolt
