Title: so angry, what would you do?
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 16 September 2012, 18:23
i had my car in a garage that i have used for 11yrs for a cambelt and tensioner pulley last week. Over this weekend I have had the bonnet open to be fitting my headlamps and Ive noticed someone has sheared off the green plug where you put the gearbox oil in!!!! I have a video of my cars engine bay before it went in to that garage to prove it wasnt like that before but now it has actually been sheared in half and there are fresh marks in the gearbox metal!! would would you do?

Not quite sure why they would be mucking about at that end when the cambelt is at the other end...did you have it serviced at the same time?
p.s thats not where the g/box oil goes in.

Dont ever put gear box oil in that hole... It's a viewing hole.... Not a filling hole... ;)

oh! hahahahaahaa shows what i know. well whatever the hole is for they didnt need to touch it!
I reckon they were f**king about with it because it has a reverse gear idler problem and clanks in reverse so maybe they were just trying to look at that without me asking them too?!

If just inspection plug had been knocked off i could understand it as they could have dropped something but that looks like someone's had a go at it with a screwdriver or something and a reverse gear idler issue is a box out job and they should know that.

well the box is being replaced on 2nd October anyway, the fools.
I am quite annoyed at this garage really because the guy that owns it used to be a one man band and I took my cars to him all the time 11yrs ago, now he is some modern big enterprise with apprentices and stuff and i think perhaps he has let a young twonk at my car?
They did the cambelt on it and its come back with a wobbly crankshaft pulley which is making a ticking noise and a sheared off plug hole!!
ive gotta go down there tomorrow by myself and argue that they have caused this because it had neither issue before it went in!

Wobbly crankshaft pulley..  this is why i've always repaired my own cars and they go to a garage once a year for m.o.t and the bloke who does it is a mate, you'd think the garage would show a bit of customer loyalty but sadly this doesn't seem to be the case these days.

Unfortunately you can't trust any shop nowadays, I had taken my Passat to VW for a couple services in South Africa, during that time they snapped the dipstick handle and never replaced it, stole the VW badge off the engine cover and claimed it wasn't them, they never replaced the spark plugs when they had charged for them each time.
Not to mention managed to scratch the paintwork in the process.

If it was me id go back and tell them im not happy and what are they going to do about it to rectify the problem

hope that answers your question LOL

If it was me I wouldn't worry about it.

Wonky pulley? You don't need to touch the pulley and for it to be wonky is something seriously wrong.

Plug was most likely removed to gain access to timing mark, to check after cambelt kit was fitted, the plastic plug has clearly gone brittle, and fractured on removal, plug was most likely seized solid! As the gearbox is being replaced in early October, and I'm guessing by the same garage, then what is the point in replacing it
I'd think twice about going back and complaining, just ask them to fit a new plug, if the exchange box doesn't have one!
Expect things to break on old cars!

the pulley does need to come off to do the cambelt i was told? so i thought maybe they had taken it off and put it on too tight or something i dont know but it wasnt wobbling before!

the gearbox is being changed by a different garage, unfortunately the guy i like to use was on holiday so went back to this one, i stopped using them about 2 years ago because they got really expensive.

Thank you!

It's going to be checked for timing and as Thom said, things break. Could be the best most careful mechanic in the world and still it could be fragile, not always as it seems.

As for the wobbly pulley are you sure it's the crank that is wobbly and not the other pulley bolted on for the drive belts and it isn't just slightly bent/mishapen making it appear to wobble?

All typical mechanics excuses, its old/worn out/ not worth much etc etc...BE MORE CAREFUL THEN AS ITS NOT LIKE YOUR DOING IT FOR FREE... sorry but i see too many people get ripped off and its just pure lazyness.

I agree, they didnt admit they had broken it and now if anyone needed to get this plug off they cant! I feel they should have said it broke and apologised at least! Im told the pulley is tight but it wasnt wobbling before, how could it just warp on its own, bit of a coincidence it happens when its been in the garage being taken apart.

Just go back and point it out. if they kick up a fuss bring up the video you've got but just ask for a replacement from them. they might have just forgotten about it when they took the old one off. as said it would have had 10 years+ to become brittle.

well i think i got a good result- went down there and said look you twit you've ruined my car...
haha not really!
I said that the belt squeak has gone but im not too happy to accept the wobbly pulley noise and im also a bit peeved no-one said they had broken the plug.
He said that they did shear off the plug but it was stuck solid so they had to use spark plug 1 to set up the cambelt or something so said they hadnt been able to get it out. he said he only left it like that because he knows im getting my gearbox replaced soon.
he is going to put a new pulley on the car for me at just the cost of the part and he said he will also fix my exhaust blow (which i had mistaken for a cool throaty noise! lol) free of charge tommorrow morning :-)

Exactly how would you have dealt with a brittle plastic plug, that was seized in solid, also knowing that the gearbox was to be exchanged shortly

when i heard that it hadnt been out that it was stuck solid i realised it was just one of those things. my initial thinking was that they had broken it putting it back in and just left it. The garage owner said if it was his he would of chopped it out with a hacksaw but he didnt want to get bits of it in the gearbox and as its being replaced anyway theres no harm done. at least there was an explanation not just that they broke it being clumsy.

Extracted the remains of the plug and replace it with a new or good second hand one, they didn't receive it with a broken inspection plug so why hand it back with one.

Oh right - replace things that are well past their sell by date because why?

The plug will have been brittle and old.  If they were truly conscientious then they should have picked up the phone when it happened and explained what had happened and that you were in for buying a replacement plug, if you wanted to, but it wasn't necessary.

But was this at a top-dollar workshop?

Was it even at a VW specialist who is more likely to care about your knackered old car?

I doubt it somehow.

Your old car is there to have a job done.  If bits of your old car break when they're doing the job, well maybe they should tell you, but maybe they figured it's an old car and you're just there because you want a job done cheaply.

If you're going to start throwing your weight around at least know what it is that they've broken, to avoid looking like a complete fool.

Take it back for a discussion about the uneven running pulley, as the four securing bolts might not be tightened up properly and it'll knacker the ribbed and V belts as it waves around.

Thank you Mr Hell
Another scenario, had the garage replaced the broken plug with a new one, then the OP would have moaned even then... for fitting an unneeded part to a gearbox that is to be scrapped, hence why the garage didn't fit a new one, or bother reporting it

Kind of like valeting your car, just before you scrap it

Actually it is a vw and an expensive one at that! I wasnt there getting it done cheaply i was there paying expensive labour costs because i expect them to be the best place for working on my car and to do a good job! My car is not old compared to their own cars, they have beetles and campers so no i dont expect things to break and be given back broken! I at least expected an explanation!

I dont apreciate being called a fool either! I am obviously no mechanic hence why i took a pic and asked what peoples advice was before doing anything.
I dont even have to explain myself, theres no need for the way u hav replied to my thread just to belittle people, if u have nothing useful to say, which i doubt u do then dont reply at all!

I've come to expect it from certain people on this forum but you give an opinion and you have to expect others to disagree, as long as you get your car repaired properly regardless of its age/value/condition then its all to the greater good.

you should be happy that they broke the plug.

it means they tryed to do the job properly,  a lot of places just dot the pullys with paint and don't bother to check the ignition timeing after fitting a new belt.

as the plug as been disturbed it means they ether removed it and it got a bit mullerd in the prosses or tryed with a resonable amount of determination to remove it so they chould set yur ignition timeing correctly with a strobe gun  useing the TDC mark on the flywheel.

old plastic  that probay getting on for 20 years old if not older can fall apart by looking at it in a funny way trying to remove it its almost garanteed it'll brake.

frount pullys cn bend when been removed there only pressed tin at the end of the day and they seize on there sometimes and need varing levels of perswation to get them off ( i'm talking about accsesory belt pullys and they do need off to do cambelt )  sometimes they bend  right pita to find replacements sometimems

Its back in today for a new pulley, hope that sorts it and the car sounds good again.

Did take it a bit personally last nite, sorry all, i get a bit upset with ppl expecting everyone to be experts, we all have to start somewhere.

Try searching for something like 'gearbox filler plug' or similar, before posting up a photo of the bellhousing inspection plug next time and you won't look a fool.

Appreciate has two 'p's by the way.

It's OK, you've made yourself look an idiot.  It's normal to be upset.  If you were right, you wouldn't have looked an idiot and you would be happy.

I think it's probably me who is being described as a fool and an idiot but thats mr hell's style and he is entitled to his opinion.

No, you are the second idiot, because you came on like an idiotic Daily Mail reader instantly agreeing when you had no idea what it was that had been touched, or that it is integral to a proper cambelt replacement.

you give an opinion and you have to expect others to disagree

Only if your opinion is mis-informed, idiotic cobblers, which is what yours was.

to be fair it's amazing how meany people think that the green plug is for filling the gearbox with oil at least we've collectively saved you a clutch at some point.

had a discussion about gearbox oil filling with a local muppet it got to the point i gave up and said.    "I bet you a clutch your not meant to put oil in there heres 5 ltrs of gear oil best you check the level since were talking about it"

Plastic gets brittle with heat its old most people butcher them off to gain access to timing markers when cam belts are done.
I'm happy they at least tried to see if the markers lined up properly so job done!
Plug is cheap as chips to replace any DIYer can do this with a bit of drilling and pulling.
Most people don't even bother with the green dust cap unless you can't pour oil into a car without pissing it everywhere like a dick

thanks for that, they are a bit far from me but the garage have sorted everything now so its ok.

Do you know what, women are not naturally clued up when it comes to cars, i developed an interest in vws, golf in particular when i was learning to drive and have tried my best, reading magazines, goingon forums and working on the cars myself to learn stuff about them.
I can repair bodywork, surface rust, rubbing down, filling and spraying and I can change body panels and parts. I can service my own car, plugs, leads, oil filter and have had a go at brake pads and exhaust changing with help from a strong pair of hands, i dont think im doing too bad actually so take the piss outta me if it makes you feel good.

I actually would never work on a gearbox or clutch myself because I know my capabilities and its obvious im no expert and to see a plug on a gearbox and assume it was for filling with gearbox oil was not a bad guess really. fair enough it was wrong but did i actually do any harm by guessing wrong.... no!!

The OP isn't that new on here. Everyone can search, on here, or on Google to avoid looking like a moron.  This avoids being treated like a moron.

Simples.

Your arrogance is unbelievable.
Just what is your problem?

To the OP, it's not a big deal, but the garage SHOULD of reported it..
This was my point.

I think we can all agree DH was being a c unt. Now we should draw a big fat line underneath it and move on. Life's too short and DH's already knows he's going to hell or the IOW, I can't remember which. But either is punishment enough.

It's not arrogance, it's terseness and an unwillingness to suffer fools. You're just seeing what suits your world-view.

There are no men or women on this forum, there are only users and Len.

This user could have posed the question quite differently rather than 'I'm SO annoyed' and avoided looking such a tit (singular).

gavv8 could have avoided jumping on this user's post and riding it like a donkey by doubling up the outrage.

quattroboy just likes being angry.

Enough already DH.   You're entitled to your opinion. Everyone else is entitled to their opinion. And Len isn't allowed an opinion.

The torch is integrated in the screwdriver. Proper  JML special special, its f**king brilliant. It's even got a magnetic, telescopic metally thing, that picks things up when you drop them.,I've never used it, but I like it, because its shiny and it looks like an antenna
