Assuming it's the same diffuser as the 'normal' GTI then there are a few torx screws underneath along the bottom edge where it joins the bumper then you prise off the diffuser slowly as there are hundreds of little tabs along the top. 5 min job max.

I seem to remember 4 at the rear...about 10 for the front lip.

i think its four, piece of cake to remove, bit harder to clip back on due to bumper deforming which was sorted with a rubber mallet and some bubble wrap

Is that a cable or a hose that looks like it's sat on the right tailpipe mate?

Just do what they do and say, they have been in the wardrobe for ages, your mum gave you them or you got them in a sale at a ridiculous price.

Or if she's anything like my Mrs just put them on and she probably won't notice   I changed from an RCD510 to the RNS510 and she never noticed a thing. Put the Nav on and when the directions were spoken out she said "I've never heard that before"........."I've just never used it before dear!!"

Just gave mine a quick wash and had a look, it looks like it's the spring, I think your picture just makes it look really close to the exhaust?  ???
