Title: vr6 or 20vt?
Post by: robo22sri on 16 September 2012, 12:27
Hi guys i am thinking about buying another mk3 shell instead of welding up mine as its fubar!

I just looked at the list of parts needed and it says a 2.0 16v is the best option car

The donar that i have found is a 8v 2.0 :(

My current car is 2.0 16v that has been coverted to a vr! Would it be easier to covert the new donar to a vr or get rid of the vr and go for a 20vt, just thinking the 20vt can get more HP than a vr

cheers Rob

I looked through the list of whats needed, It was more the should i just transfer all the vr stuff out my current car to the donar or should i just sell of the vr lump with everything and start with a 20vt turbo

the vr engine is a little dated but is 20vt that good engine? i have never driven or been in one!

I'm doing a 2.8 24v swap from the mk4 4motion. And with cams, head work, light bottom end and a remap I should be looking for +260bhp with no turbo issue to worry about. And the sound of a r32

How comes you chose the 2.8 24v 4mo lump over a 20vt?

That is one thing the vr etc have the sound track :)

20vt s gonna be the fastest

non turbo means weak torque and thats what wins the the races

would be easier for u to convert your 8v to VR6 TBH, and wont cost you anything

to go 20VT properly is gonna cost you a fair bit.. i do have a engine for sale tho with all the bits you would need from the donor car (engine, loom, ECU, Gearbox etc etc)

I personally would not swap my current engine set up for any other in my mk3

Thats what i was thinking, i could probably sell my vr engine as a package but i dont think it will cover the costs of a 20vt conversion

My vr has schimmel cams and a schrick inlet

How much do you want for all set up out of interested?

i want £700 for everything this include 02J gearbox, and even the shifter cables etc all ancillaries, looms, ECU, downpipe etc etc

it has the K03S turbo too so its good for around 230bhp with a map

I race karts on weekend any my kart makes a new Nissan gtr feel slow on track, so I have no reason for wanting a fast car.

I would buy a fast car to start with if I did.

The sound is what I'm after. Ever heard a 2.8 v6 rev up to 7500rpm?

Much better than a 4banger turbo

hear it quite often yeah.. does noting for me personally. more bothered about the technology behind it over the noise but we all like different things

However:

You should try a highly tuned 18T with a RS2 Turbo, and wastegate externally dumping past 7.5k then u will see the addiction

sounds nothing like a normal 1.8T even on normal driving

anyhow, back to engine i have:

Engine is AGU bottom end with a AUM head recently replaced (1000 miles) runs absolutly perfection

here it is from a cold start:

This argument always annoys me!

Just to make it straight they are both great engines! And I'm a VR6 man all day long but when people keep going on that the 1.8T is miles better thts what gets me!

The sound of a VR is great and thats from a standard engine! Highly tuned 1.8? Yea I'm sure it does sound the boy but I'm also sure it'll cost a fair wack as well!

The only advice I'd give is it's totally down to personal taste! It'll never be won or lost otherwise!

VR6 = easy cheap power and don't forget you can get silly power from them to if your pockets are deep enough! Ideal for first time engine swaps ect

1.8T = great power and  boosts for more power but from what I can gather it'll cost a load more in the long run! Need to be abit more of an expert on these or have someone around tht knows what there doing!
