Title: GTi 8v starting problems...
Post by: lancs83 on 16 September 2012, 10:55
Hi - Ive replaced the lift pump, main fuel pump, accumulator, fuel relay etc etc. ~and tried 3 diffrent ECU's but I still cant get my GTi going

The best it will do is start and run for a few minutes but die as soon as I try and rev it.

But now it wont even do that! it turns and starts and dies after a second. It does actually start then dies straight away. if I try and restart sometimes it dosent even turn over.

any suggestions?  Ive tried testing the earth's and it seems to be earthed fine. (rcker cover, gearbox etc) Thanks

is your fuel filter blocked

my hall sensor packed up & had similar symptoms
try this from memory, but check the Haynes manual....
undo the electrical plug on the dizzy , put a multi meter set on DC volts
across the outer 2 connections (on the lead NOT the dizzy)
turn the ignition on , it should show 5volts
if yes it's probably the hall sensor (i had to get mine from Bosch in Germany £94 ..IIRC)
if not the ign module is probably shagged

have a look in the haynes manual (green cover version)

Also check all the earths on the car - most ECU issues are due to bad earths..

I had a similar problem and one of the wires to the MAF had worn through

Got the car to start and run - engine warmed up and could take revs / drive the car etc. Drove it to the MOT station and they have had it about 2 weeks. Now they have got round to it and it wont start again! Got a spark but no go

Tried the ignition moduel ontop of the ecu? You still get spark when they are blown.

Ok thanks for the suggestions - will check these. I have a spare ignition module. How much are MAF sensors?

Thanks Luke
